Last Post of the Day – Ballad Of Serenity – Firefly Theme Song

Shockingly, this post is not related to Jimmy Buffett or tropical stuff. I know, it’s different and the first time I’ve done this on a “Last Post of the Day” but I’m in a bit of a different mood tonight.

I’m a big fan of the TV show “Firefly” and the movie “Serenity” that was based off of it. I’m a science fiction fan, but it has to be good science fiction. This is really good stuff.

Firefly follows the crew of a transport ship named Serenity through their travels between planets as they try to make a living while staying out of the sights of the ruling Alliance. Captain Malcolm Reynolds purchased the ship after his side, the Independents, lost a war for independence from the Alliance. Simon and River Tam are fugitives from the Alliance, Jayne the mercenary has a thirst for money and skill with weapons, Inara is a “companion” and her trade is only legal in the United States in Nevada. Shepard Book is a preacher who decided to get out and spread the word instead of staying in the abbey, Kaylee is the (I think pretty good looking!) ship’s mechanic, and Wash is the pilot who happens to be married to Zoe, the ship’s first officer and one of Malcolm Reynolds’ fellow freedom fighters during the war.

It’s got adventure, rooting for the underdog, fighting for freedom, and great characters which is part of why it’s one of my favorite shows. The other reason it’s one of my favorite shows is the theme song. The song was written by the show’s creator, Joss Wheadon. Ballad of Serenity comes pretty close to how I feel on occasion. Sometimes when things aren’t going all that great, I just remember that I’m still free to do what I want as long as I’m OK with the consequences, that there’s a whole bunch of open road and open desert in Nevada, and that no matter what’s going on right at that moment, nobody knows the future, limitless opportunities abound if we only look for them, and that if we stick with it long enough, it will always get better 8)

I was re-watching the pilot episode on when I came across this exchange which gets to the same point:

Captain Reynolds: I had a good day.

Simon Tam: You had the alliance on you, criminals and savages, half the people on the ship have been shot or wounded including yourself, and you’re harboring known fugitives.

Captain Reynolds: We’re still flyin’.

Simon Tam: That’s not much.

Captain Reynolds: It’s enough

Of course, the song just has a great sound as well

I was able to find the opening sequence for the show on YouTube along with a place to download the .mp3 file for the song which I don’t ever think was released. The YouTube video’s below and you can right click and save as here for the .mp3.

Take my love
Take my land
Take me where I cannot stand

I don’t care
I’m still free
You can’t take the sky from me

Take me out
To the black
Tell them I ain’t comin’ back

Burn the land
And boil the sea
You can’t take the sky from me

There’s no place
I can be
Since I found Serenity

You can’t take the sky from me

How true it is – I’m still free, you can’t take the sky from me, and sometimes it’s enough to know that you’re still flyin’ even if flyin’ is just paying the bills and being able to afford to eat

Keep flyin’ everyone 8)

At first I was going to say I had never heard of it, but when I watched that video, yes, I’ve seen that before–like in a commercial or something. Looks okay.

As much as I love Star Wars, I just never stop long on the science fiction channel. (Too afraid of creepy monsters!!)

I saw the movie and it was a trip. 8) But I would have preferred Godsmack and their song “Serenity” But as a metal fan,,,,,,well, ya know.
And I agree with Kath. The SyFy channel is short on sci-fi and long on slasher, horror, monster movies. They are far from being Science Fiction.

  • I agree with both of you about the SciFi channel :) The funny thing is that I didn’t learn about this show or the movie until after the show was long gone from first run showings and on to DVD

And yes, I do love the movie 8)

  • But the real question…are you fans of what was easily the best show on TV (on SciFi/SyFy, of all places): Battlestar Galactica? Not the original, the remake. Speaking as someone who loved Firefly and Serenity, BSG was still better…by the slightest of margins.

That said, I think Inara might take offense to this description: “Inara is a “companion” and her trade is only legal in the United States in Nevada.” Companions were most definitely NOT prostitutes/whores, as evidenced by “Heart of Gold” and “Jaynestown.” …yes, I just outed myself as a huge nerd. My tac-ed out AR-15 (tac sling, Aimpoint Comp M4, BUIS, picatinny rail forend with a side sling mount and Surefire flashlight mounted on it) is named Vera.

“I aim to misbehave.” “You know what would come in handy right now? Some GRENADES!”

    • HOW DID I MISS THIS ONE  ???

Mike, I’ve gotta say that due to a lack of cable for the past few years, I haven’t seen the new BSG. And yes, I know you’re right, but I couldn’t figure out just how to describe Inara to the lay people so to speak.

“You want to run this ship?”
      “Well… You can’t!”

OK, so you took two of my favorite quotes, but I’ve still got one more…

      “Define interesting”
“Oh God, oh god, we’re all gonna die?”
“This is the Captain, we have a little problem with our entry sequence so we may experience some slight turbulence and then explode”
      “We’re gonna explode? I don’t wanna explode.”
