20 February 2009 - Accomodations for the Night

So yeah, I spent the night at the doctor’s office last night. I won’t bore anyone with too many details, but suffice it to say that it was confirmed that I do suffer from sleep apnea and a CPAP (Constant Positive Airway Pressure machine is in my future.

For those who don’t know what sleep apnea is, basically I stop breathing for quite some time while asleep due to airway obstruction by my own body. My mind then takes me back to over 90% awakeness again to get me breathing and it all starts over. This is why I feel like I’m on three hours of sleep when I get eight. I’m really bad on three hours.

The CPAP machine keeps a constant higher air pressure in the airway so it can’t be obstructed. Yes, the mask is weird looking and a bit big. Yes, it’s attached to a large hose. Yes, it can be VERY difficult for some to adjust to.

I’m only guessing, but I think I was about 1/2 way through the study last night when they decided it was clear that I needed a CPAP and that no further study was necessary. The tech, Travis (really nice guy) came in and put it on me and fired up the machine. I can only speak for myself, but I’m here to tell ya that I had zero problems with adjusting to the mask  !

I know the picture isn’t the greatest, but I was a bit pressed for time

Have fun everyone!

So if you do this every night and finally start getting real sleep — congrats on that — then does it train you in any way so you can be off of it? I mean, like after six months or something?

    • Thanks!

No, no getting off of the machine from what I understand. Heck, even when I was down to 200 lbs (and I’ve got a long way to go to get back there) I still had this problem. No, it wasn’t as bad, but it was still there.
