iPhone Price Cuts Anger Previous Purchasers

FOXNews.com – Apple iPhone Owners Outraged by Huge Price Cut – Technology News | News On Technology

Less than 10 weeks after the much-ballyhooed combination cell phone/media player/Web surfer went on sale, its price was cut by $200.

The iPhone has been one of the hottest, most desired gadgets for the summer of ’07. Thousands of people have shelled out $600 for the eight gigabyte version or $500 for the four gigabyte model. The announcement that the price of both versions is being cut by $200 and that the four gigabyte model has been discontinued due to lackluster sales has seriously ticked off most of those who just had to have it first.

I told one of the supervisors at work about the price cut shortly after hearing about it yesterday, knowing just how much he loves his iPhone (he’s always playing with it). His reaction? He literally tossed it into the nearest trash can before hastily retreiving it :P .

I don’t think the collective ire of iPhone users is due to the price cut itself, but instead it’s because of the short time that’s elapsed from the much hyped launch and the surprising amount by which it was cut. We expect the price of technology to come down in time. Heck, you can pick up a one gigabyte mp3 player with a memory card slot which will allow expansion to five gigabytes for $50 or a CD player for $10 if you know where to look.

I was rather surprised by this price cut and its timing. I would expect the price to remain stable through the Christmas shopping season and then drop after that, expecially for something as sought after as the iPhone.

I like the iPhone, but I think I’ll keep my year old SonyEricsson Z525a. I’ve got a couple of mp3 players for music duty and my new six megapixel digital camera for pictures. I don’t need a mobile video player and I can live without the internet when I’m not at home or at work. Of course, I’d happily accept one as a Birthday or Christmas gift  .
