Explosion in Syria Spreads Chemical Weapons – Syrians and Iranians Killed

LONDON — A Syrian military installation rocked by an explosion in July was being used to develop chemical weapons, and Iranian engineers were among those killed, a respected defense publication reported Wednesday.

But Jane’s cited Syrian defense sources as saying the explosion took place during a test to fit a “Scud C” missile with a mustard-gas warhead. It quoted the sources as saying the explosion occurred when fuel caught fire in the missile production laboratory.”

The blast dispersed chemical agents (including VX and Sarin nerve agents and mustard blister agent) across the storage facility and outside,” the publication quoted the sources as saying.

A whole bunch of people including the former head of the Iraqi Air Force under Saddam have publicly said that Iraq’s chemical weapons ended up in Syria. There was even a plot that was broken up by Jordanian officials which would have released tons of chemical weapons in Amman. It seems some people just don’t like friends of the U.S.

Whether or not they came from Saddam or were developed domestically, Syria appears to have chemical weapons. If there isn’t already a U.N. resolution, there should be. The U.S., E.U. and NATO ought to be all over this. I doubt any will. I figure it will probably be left to Israel. Rumor has it that the Israeli Air Force went for a short flight in Syrian territory recently.

The larger issue is that Syria has been known to arm Hezbollah. Syria is partnering with Iran – a country whose President has sworn to wipe Israel off the map. Syria and Iran have shown no love lost for the U.S., either and both are designated state sponsors of terrorism.

This one has me nervous. You see, if they attack Israel with chemical weapons or supply terrorists who do, the gloves come off and Israel will do what they feel they must. If they attack the United States with chemical weapons or supply terrorists who do, they’ve just raised the bar in the matter. The U.S. considers chemical weapons to be “Weapons of Mass Destruction” and policy is to respond in kind. We won’t attack with chemical or biological weapons. That leaves nukes…
