There is a very high priced truck stop and store at the Essex Road exit on I-40. A cold roast beef sandwich on a hoagie roll and a 20 ounce root beer wiped out a ten dollar bill one day. I was waiting for a crew for my ballast train at Danby. And for the semi-historic hippie note, the Bagdad Cafe is in Newberry Springs. Bagdad is a station sign. The stretch between Needles and Ludlow is one of the more empty places I have ever been. Most of those places are just station signs on the railroad now. The cool part is every now and then, there are Historic Route 66 markers painted on the surface of the road. I believe that I-40 is the southern boundary of The Joshua Tree National Monument.
