UPDATED!!! – Weather And Why I REALLY Don’t Want to Go to Work Monday…I’ve said before that I work in telecommunications repair. Yep, I’m the person people call when their service goes down. The largest cause of failure when it comes to voice and data connections is bad weather. Rain can flood manholes and conduits while wind can play havoc with aerial pairs – those wires up on poles. We in the repair department cringe when the forecast calls for bad weather. I’m not about to say what company I work for in case someone might complain, but I can tell you that we have the majority of our customers in Las Vegas, San Diego, LA, and San Francisco. I’d seen that there might be rain on Monday when I checked the forecast on Friday. It’s gotten much worse since then. Check out the current forecast for yourselves.
I’m nearly certain that we’ll be working mandatory overtime and I’m seriously pissed off about that. No, it’s not the time I object to, but rather the way the pay will work out. I’ve taken 16 hours of vacation time this pay period, but that doesn’t count towards overtime. Instead, I’ll be working overtime and it’ll be subtracted from the amount of vacation time that will be recorded on my paycheck. Yep, I’ll be paid the same whether or not I work overtime unless I work over 16 hours of it. No time and a half. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers – I’m going to need all the support I can get when dealing with both the customers and management in the next few days if it goes the way I’m nearly certain it will at work due to the weather. UPDATE!!! – It appears that I’ll be collecting overtime after all as my vacation was last week and overtime is calculated based on this week Happy days are here again Still, the weather sucks and the calls are rolling in 8 comments to UPDATED!!! – Weather And Why I REALLY Don’t Want to Go to Work Monday… |

Wait. So even if you work overtime within a day — say you work 12 hours today — at the end of the pay period, it’s not more than 40 hours of work, bec. you took vacation? Well, that sucks.
But keep in mind, at least you did get to have some vacation — I cancelled my Dec. week and will take it later, bec. we were just too darn busy.
And I don’t get paid the same when I’m on vac as when I’m here — yeah, I know greedy piggy, shouldn’t complain.
So, it might not help, but I know the FRUSTRATION of work. And for you, especially, bec. you have to deal with the public — and probably by the time they get to you, a very frustrated public!! Try to have a good day.
That’s what can happen. Still, I may be stuck here until 1830 tonight, but I’m holding up OK – massive doses of caffeine will do that for you
Wow… those work rules suck. I take it you’re not an IBEW or a CWA kinda guy?
And good luck on the WX. I know from whence you speak about outages and stuff. NOT good.
Nope, no union here and in some ways I prefer it – the authority goes both ways with those guys and it ain’t always the best for the worker.
Thanks for the well wishes even if it’s cold and rainy
Here’s hoping it gets better
Caffeine, nicotine and Gatorade, the railroad contractor’s lifeblood.
Water in the cables!
I hit the caffeine today big time and it’s looking like a repeat tomorrow
Did give up the nicotine, though. Guess what day that was!
Yep, I remember you talking about that
Congrats on that accomplishment
