Picture(s) A Day – 12 December 2009 – Aviation Nation 2009 Film Rolls #2 & #3
By Parrothead Jeff, on 12 December 2009
So, work today wasn’t much to write home about. I got one call in two hours and they cut us loose after two hours if we wanted to go. The only thing I’m at all unhappy about is that I had to wake up at a reasonable hour on a Saturday
After work, I did go and get a money order for $30 and a couple of rolls of film developed which is why you have these great pictures from Nellis tonight
Yes, these were a few of the shots I took on Sunday with the Canon Rebel SLR my brother got me. I could use a more powerful zoom lens, but other than that it ROCKS

I don’t know if you remember when I wrote about the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) showing up at Aviation Nation, but they sure put on one heckuva show with their F-16 demo team
Those aren’t actual missiles on the wingtip launchers, they’re “smoke winders” that use a small flame to atomize smoke oil just like the systems on the Thunderbirds’ jets. The flame coming out the back isn’t normal, though
This was the pilot’s last flight and he performed what I consider to have been an excellent demonstration

Also on these rolls were some of the pictures of Sunday’s A-10 demo flight which was FREAKING AWESOME 8) The A-10 was due to be retired a couple of times, but has proven to be much too valuable in the roll of close air support. These days, the Warthog is considered important enough that the Air Force is going to have new wings made for them as the originals are wearing out.
These aren’t the only pictures from that demonstration, so look for more in the not too distant future

Last for today but most certainly not least are a few pictures of the mighty F-4 Phantom II
Nicknames for the F-4 include “the flying brick,” “Rhino,” and “Double Ugly” but I think it just looks mean! This is a different variation of the jet my Godfather flew off the decks of the Midway and America in VF-161 during the Vietnam war. Phantoms are loud, but their bite is worse than their bark.
Well, it’s time to call this post finished. Have fun everyone
Nice pics, Jeff. I could look at plane pr0n ALL day long…
Thanks, Buck
I figured you’d like those
The A-10 is the nice diversion from the Falcons and Raptors I see all day!
You do realize how many people out there would think you’re nuts for saying that, right
? I know where you’re coming from, though
And yes, I do love the A-10
