It is a serious fire bomber. But don’t look for the California Forestry Department to use it. We have the governator and the moonbeam still screwing things up. But it is just a neat airplane!

Oakland, CA isn’t a place I’d want to live. I’m sure the climate’s OK and Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghiradelli Square, and the Palace of Fine Arts are right across the bay, but the politics aren’t exactly my speed. The crime rate and reactions to unpopular court decisions aren’t the greatest either.

Now the city of Oakland has decided that they might need to cut 80 police from the force and stop responding to some crimes in person to save money.

From NBC Bay Area:

Chief Anthony Batts listed exactly 44 situations that his officers will no longer respond to and they include grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft and vandalism. He says if you live and Oakland and one of the above happens to you, you need to let police know on-line.

Some 80 officers were to be let go at midnight last night if a last-minute deal was not reached. That’s about ten percent of the work force.

“I came her e to build an organization, not downsize one,” said Batts, who was given the top job in October.

That deadline has been extended to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Here’s a partial list:

* burglary
* theft
* embezzlement
* grand theft
* grand theft:dog
* identity theft
* false information to peace officer
* required to register as sex or arson offender
* dump waste or offensive matter
* discard appliance with lock
* loud music
* possess forged notes
* pass fictitious check
* obtain money by false voucher
* fraudulent use of access cards
* stolen license plate
* embezzlement by an employee (over $ 400)
* extortion
* attempted extortion
* false personification of other
* injure telephone/ power line
* interfere with power line
* unauthorized cable tv connection
* vandalism
* administer/expose poison to another’s

Negotiations are going on at Oakland City Hall in the mayor’s office.

My question here is why bother with the cops at all? If they’re not going to do what the Citizens need from you aside from handling the serious crimes such as murder and arson, why even bother? I know ways to stop loud music, especially if the cops won’t come out on a report of interfering with or injuring a power line

And some people still wonder why I’m willing to put up with temperatures as low as 16° in the winter, 126° in the summer, and winds that gust into the 80 MPH range at times when the Pacific Ocean is ever so inviting. Here’s one of the reasons:

From Todd Starnes via Weasel Zippers:

The battle over the American flag has reached a middle school art class in California’s Santa Rita School District where a student was told not to draw Old Glory because it was “offensive,” while another student was praised for drawing a picture of President Obama.

Tracy Hathaway, of Salinas, CA, told FOX News Radio her 13-year-old daughter was ordered to stop drawing the American flag and start another project at Gavilan View Middle School.

“She had drawn the flag and was sketching the letters, ‘God bless America,’ when the teacher confronted her,” Hathaway told FOX. “She said, ‘You can’t draw that – that’s offensive.’”

Even more striking, another student in the same art class drew a picture of President Obama and was praised by the teacher.

“The picture of Barack Obama was in red, white and blue hues,” Hathaway said. “ The teacher said it was great. But when it comes to the flag – all of a sudden it was offensive?”

Hathaway said she took her concerns to the principal – and he was “floored” and apologized for what happened. He arranged a meeting with the Hathaways and the teacher.

But we ain’t done yet.

“The school administration and the parents did not view this as significant enough to bring it to the superintendent’s office,” he wrote.

However, Hathaway said her daughter has yet to receive an apology – and in fact – the teacher told the girl that she should not have gotten her parents involved in the matter.

“My daughter felt like her rights were being trampled on – she was doing what she thought was right.” she said. “It’s disturbing. It really is disturbing. When I was in junior high we didn’t have a lot of the problems they are having now. We were allowed to speak our mind. It’s absolutely devastating for me. Last time I looked, this is America. This is still a free country.”
