The first time I heard “Love and Luck” was on the “Buffett Live – Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays” album.  It’s a little different than the studio version naturally, but they’re both good

“Zouk” is a popular form of music from the French Antilles, the kind that makes you dance without knowing what the singer is saying. Since the songs are in patois French, this helps. I once received a request for permission to write new lyrics to the melody of Margaritaville by a very famous European singer and thought it was great and was interested to hear their interpretation. Well this is the melody to a song called “kole Sere,” written by my friend Joecely Beroard, the lead singer for a great Zouk band named Kaasav. The lyrics are mine and I hope that they like the way I interpret their music. This was the first song ever recorded at Shrimp Boat Sound in Key West and Steve Winwood is the guest organist. I thank him for taking time out from his fishing trip.

After a four day weekend, I’m doing better than I was on Friday and I know that I’ve only got a three day work week ahead of me.  I can do this!  Still, it’s back to the trenches to fight it out with the forces of all that break technology and not the least stressful or most fun thing on the planet by a long shot.  Therefore, I try to find something to keep me on more of an even keel.  This song will do nicely – it’s got a good beat, a nice melody, and it’s catchy enough to get stuck in my head which is exactly what I need

The Preamble to The Bill of Rights

Congress of the United States
begun and held at the City of New-York, on
Wednesday the fourth of March, one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine.

THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.

RESOLVED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, two thirds of both Houses concurring, that the following Articles be proposed to the Legislatures of the several States, as amendments to the Constitution of the United States, all, or any of which Articles, when ratified by three fourths of the said Legislatures, to be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of the said Constitution; viz.

ARTICLES in addition to, and Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America, proposed by Congress, and ratified by the Legislatures of the several States, pursuant to the fifth Article of the original Constitution.

Note: The following text is a transcription of the first ten amendments to the Constitution in their original form. These amendments were ratified December 15, 1791, and form what is known as the “Bill of Rights.”

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Amendment II

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Amendment III

No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

Amendment IV

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Amendment V

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Amendment VI

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

Amendment VII

In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.

Amendment VIII

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

Amendment IX

The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

Amendment X

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

This song entered my life quite a few years ago thanks to Adrienne – it was one of her favorites and it’s still one of mine today.  It’s another one of those tunes that works for a few different times – like when stuff is going downhill fast or when you just can’t sleep because of all the loose marbles rolling around in your noggin.  Being human, both of those happen to me from time to time – no, I haven’t lost all my marbles yet despite reports to the contrary

I don’t know about the rest of you out there, but there’s a few songs I like to listen to on certain occasions.  When I’ve had one helluva day (or in this case one helluva weekend), I can find it difficult to get any shuteye.  The stuff just kinda swirls around in my subconscious and pops into my conscious mind from time to time.  It really sucks when I’m either as tired or as sick as I am right now.

Most people probably don’t think of ballads when they think of the Rolling Stones.  I’ll bet they don’t know as much of the band’s material as I do.  I’m not trying to boast here – I’ve just grown up listening to them due to my brother being a big fan.  I’ve seen ‘em five times in concert and loved them all.  While I might like their hard rock and roll in songs like “It’s Only Rock and Roll,” “Paint it Black,” and “Saint of Me,” I also like their slower tunes like this one.

“Sleep Tonight” just has a nice, mellow, kicked back sound that puts me into a much more restful and relaxed frame of mind when I really need it.  Check out the YouTube recording above to see what I’m talking about

I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but this has been one of my favorite songs since it came out.  Good vs. bad, lawmen and outlaws, and good, old fashioned justice – it’s got lots of the good stuff

Good people everywhere seem like they’re getting fed up with criminals getting slaps on their wrists.  They want something done and I’m pretty sure they’re about ready to do it themselves if stuff doesn’t change.  Toby captured that pretty well in this song.

While I’m not endorsing lynching anyone or going after vigilante justice, I can definitely understand why people would want to do just that.  I will, however, endorse good people carrying an effective means of defense against those who would do them harm.
