OK, enough of that – here’s the pics

I headed on over to New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms after work after not darkening their doorway for two whole weeks Well, Guido who owns New Frontier Armory just got a new toy and I couldn’t pass up getting a pic of it These trucks don’t get the greatest gas mileage as you can imagine but I still want one in a big way – they’re just cool 8) Of course, the fact that you can get one for between $1,500 and $2,000 might have something to do with it, too

23 July 2010 - Geocaching vehicle travel bug

I haven’t been geocaching in quite a while, but I still recognized this for what it is – a travel bug decal on a vehicle

If you haven’t heard of geocaching, check out geocaching.com and see if it’s something you might like. All you need is a GPS receiver and a computer, but a pencil helps as well sometimes Basically, people hide geocaches, record the GPS coordinates, post them on geocaching.com, and then you go find them and log your finds on geocaching.com. A geocache is basically some sort of container with a log inside that you sign. Many of them also contain a pencil to sign the log with and a few trade items like key chains and small compasses. You’re always supposed to trade up – leave something nicer than you took for others to trade. It’s a fun way to get out and do something

23 July 2010 - Heading home under the desert sun

It will likely come as no surprise that it’s been HOT lately here in Las Vegas I took this picture while heading home from NFA/IA when it was about 114° or so and yes, it’s just as hot as you’d imagine. At least the humidity’s down near 10% so it’s pretty livable

Last, but not least I have a video for a change I set up my Nikon Coolpix S220 in interval mode to take 1 picture per minute looking out from my desk at work when I saw a thunderstorm building. Once I had all the pictures, I put ‘em into Windows Movie Maker and made a time lapse movie 8) The music comes from YouTube’s “audio swap” feature and I think it works rather well

That’s it for now Here’s hoping you have a great Sunday

Silencerco - image used with permission

I recently had a chance to get a bit of hands-on time with a rare new piece of equipment. The 45 Osprey is a fairly new offering from Silencerco and not too many people have ‘em yet. Lucky for me, I’ve got friends in the business

Before we go any further, let’s go over just a few details. Many people (even in states like Nevada and Arizona) think that silencers are illegal. They think that unless you’re military or law enforcement that these devices are forbidden under federal law. Nothing could be further from the truth. If silencers are illegal in the United States, it’s state law that makes them so. Many more states allow for private ownership than don’t. AL, AR, AK, AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, NC, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, and WY have no problem with civilian ownership.

FN Herstal FNP-45 and Silencerco 45 Osprey

FN Herstal FNP-45 and Silencerco 45 Osprey

Yep, I was back down at Infinite Arms / New Frontier Armory They just got their first Osprey in and I had the opportunity to get some time with it hands-on. Unfortunately, this one is already sold so we couldn’t do any live fire with it. If I know the group of gun guys I hang out with, someone will buy an Osprey and I’ll have a chance to see how quiet it is in person. The 45 Osprey is the first .45 ACP suppressor which is hearing safe without using some sort of ablative media like water or grease. Shooting a suppressor “wet” means using water, grease, or another substance in the can and brings the noise level down quite a bit by cooling the gases which causes them to contract. Silencers act like mufflers and slow their escape so lower volume means slower escape and less noise out the front.

Silencerco 45 Osprey with a Glock 21 SF fitted with an extended magazine

Because the Osprey attaches to the muzzle of a weapon instead of being an integral part of the barrel or firearm, it can be used on anything with a threaded barrel. The Glock above doesn’t have a threaded barrel so we had to pose the pieces together on the counter top. I would love to own this system – you can’t ask for a better pistol than a Glock, the magazine holds 28 rounds, .45 caliber is a hard-hitting round, and the 45 Osprey makes for a very pleasant and quiet way to enjoy it all

Just me getting artsy with the Silencerco logo on the 45 Osprey

I don’t know about you, but that Silencerco logo is one of the best I’ve seen

Attachment point for the Silencerco 45 Osprey

The business end of the Silencerco 45 Osprey

As you might have noticed, the Osprey is a bit different than your average suppressor. It’s rectangular and “eccentric” which means the path of the bullet through it isn’t down the center. This gives the Osprey more internal volume which contributes to its quiet nature. There are other eccentric silencers out there, but Silencerco chose to go with a slab-sided appearance rather than a conventional round shape for a couple of reasons. Aside from making the Osprey look like an extension of most of the likely host weapons, it also adds to the ability of the host and suppressor to be holstered. Silencers are cool, but sometimes you need your hands free and that’s where a holster shines

One of the problems you run into with eccentric suppressors is that of “indexing” the suppressor to the firearm. You can’t know exactly which way the suppressor will be oriented in relation to a firearm when you first thread it onto a gun. The Osprey uses a lever and brake on the lower rear of the unit to deal with this issue, but more about that later

Recoil booster (AKA Nielson device) for the Silencerco 45 Osprey

Recoil booster (AKA Nielson device) for the Silencerco 45 Osprey

Recoil booster (AKA Nielson device) for the Silencerco 45 Osprey

When using a suppressor with a locked breach pistol, you often need to use a “recoil booster” or “Nielsen device” to ensure proper cycling. When a locked breach handgun is fired, the barrel moves back with the slide for a short distance before the slide disengages from it and continues on its way back. The motion of the slide is controlled by the rearward force generated by the firing of the cartridge and the forward force of the spring which returns the slide to battery at the end of the cycle. Adding a silencer, even one as light as an Osprey, can throw the balance of forces off and cause the gun to fail to run correctly. The added weight of the suppressor keeps the barrel from moving back with as much momentum as it would normally have.

A Nielsen device uses a couple of concentric sliding cylinders and a spring to get around this. When the round is fired, the barrel and slide begin to move back and the dead weight of the suppressor is isolated by the sliding of the cylinders inside one another before the spring returns them to their resting positions. The Silencerco version of the Nielsen device is modular so you can take it apart to clean it or to replace the part that threads onto the gun’s muzzle with one for a smaller caliber. Buy a 45 Osprey and you can use it with a .40 S&W or 9mm with the correct adapter. It’s best to use a dedicated suppressor for each caliber, but they’re not cheap and there’s that federal transfer tax to deal with. A 45 Osprey is still pretty darn quiet with those other rounds.

Silencerco 45 Osprey - Engagement point for the indexing system

Here’s the back end of the Osprey with the Nielsen device removed. You can see the threads where the Nielsen device attaches to the suppressor as well as the cam lever indexing system. The indexing brake has teeth cut into it like a gear (see the area circled in red above) which engage teeth on the Nielsen device to ensure that once the suppressor has been indexed to the firearm it doesn’t move.

For those people out there who haven’t read my previous post about the Silencerco Sparrow, one of the most important concerns for a civilian owner of a suppressor is preventing damage to the serial numbered part. As I said earlier, there’s nothing in Federal law preventing a civilian from owning a silencer but that doesn’t mean the Feds don’t have anything to do with it.

As part of the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA – not to be confused with New Frontier Armory ), silencers are regulated by the Federal government along with short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns, machine guns, and “Any Other Weapons” (AOWs) like disguised guns and smooth bore pistols. It takes a bit of paperwork, a federal background check, and payment of a $200 transfer tax upon the transfer of ownership. The only other consideration of owning and using NFA items is that you have to get permission from the Feds before you cross state lines with them. Other than that, they’re just like any other gun.

The upshot of this is that the only part that has paperwork and a $200 transfer tax associated with it is the serial numbered part. By law, this is considered to be the firearm or in this case the suppressor. Damage to any other part merely means replacing that part. Damaging the serial numbered part usually means replacing that part and even if it’s covered under warranty, the owner is on the hook for another $200 transfer tax. Designing a silencer with an eye towards preventing this is rather important as you can imagine.

Osprey in its component parts - Image courtesy of Silencerco

Joshua Waldron is the CEO of Silencerco. After corresponding with him for a while now, I have to say that he’s one of the most responsive, approachable, and friendly executives I’ve had the chance to deal with It’s only because of his generosity that I have the picture above and for that I’m very thankful Because this is not a user serviceable unit, I couldn’t disassemble the unit at Infinite Arms for pictures. Joshua was kind enough to take the time and make the effort to take this picture and provide it to me for this post and for my readers. That’s what I call service

The Sparrow is designed to be fully user serviceable for a reason. As I noted before, you not only get buildup from burned gunpowder in a rimfire suppressor, you also get lead buildup because rimfire ammo is not jacketed. With non-jacketed ammunition, you get a mist of molten lead from the muzzle when you fire the gun. That lead solidifies on the internal components of the suppressor causing a loss of internal volume and sound reduction. If you can’t take a rimfire suppressor apart to clean it yourself, you have to send it back to the manufacturer every few thousand rounds to have them do it for you. You’ll pay for it every time and you’ll also have to do some paperwork with the BATFE.

Centerfire suppressors don’t have that problem for the most part because they fire jacketed ammunition. Because the copper jacket on the bullet isn’t molten when it leaves the barrel, all you get is some residue from the burned gunpowder. That means you don’t have to make them user serviceable which means that they’re not as complicated You should never have to send your Osprey back to Silencerco for work under their lifetime warranty as long as you use it as it was intended.

Going from left to right in the picture we have the parts are the Nielsen device, the rear end cap, the outer tube, and the monolithic baffle stack with its Nielsen device interface and front end cap. Click here for a picture I’ve edited to label each of the parts

The design of the Osprey incorporates several key design features. We’ll start with the Nielsen device. Three component parts make up the Nielsen device – the piston, the spring, and the spring retainer / indexing ring. The piston is caliber and thread specific – it’s the only part of the Osprey system that needs to be changed out when changing to a smaller caliber firearm or a different thread pattern. The spring retainer / indexing ring attaches to the piston to retain the spring and it’s the part that the indexing brake engages to properly index the Osprey to the host. It’s also the part that threads into the Nielsen device interface at the rear of the baffle stack and physically attaches the Nielsen device (and therefore the piston which is threaded to the barrel) to the host firearm.

The rear end cap houses the indexing cam and brake and is only connected to one other part of the unit – the outer tube. There are no threads on it, so it can’t be galled or cross-threaded. There are no baffles connected to it so it can’t be damaged by a baffle strike. It’s one piece of metal so there are no joints to crack or break. That’s good engineering in my book!

The Nielsen device interface is the round part at the end of the baffle stack. The primary blast baffle is in the front of this part and it’s made of 17-4 heat treated steel. The primary blast baffle is steel instead of aluminum for strength and durability – Silencerco doesn’t skimp on anything and everything is done for a reason.

Moving on to the monolithic (one piece) baffle stack, the design of the modified slant baffles was meant to increase the stability of the bullet as it passes through the suppressor. An increase in bullet stability reduces the possibility of a baffle strike (a bullet hitting a baffle which is highly undesirable) while minimizing the shift in the point of impact in relation to the point of aim that comes with using most silencers. Not all of the baffles are modified slant baffles – the first baffle in the stack is a secondary blast baffle with a similar shape to the baffles in the Sparrow (Silencerco’s rimfire suppressor) to further maximize bullet stability.

If anything isn’t clear in how I’ve described everything, please either email me or contact Silencerco and we’ll be glad to help you

We’ve already talked about the advantages of the overall shape of the suppressor, but we haven’t talked about the materials. The majority of the Osprey is aluminum which is why it’s so light. At 11.1 ounces, it’s very light and I didn’t find it uncomfortable in the least while gripping the FNP-45 with it attached.

Now that's a fun setup - FNP-45 with high mounted night sights and a Silencerco 45 Osprey

Folks, I’m not an expert and I know that there are other great designs out there. I like Silencerco because they’re a small business with good, innovative ideas and who are making the best product they know how. They focus on dry suppression so you don’t have to worry about whether or not you have water, oil or another ablative medium. They’re affordable as silencers go and they come with a lifetime warranty. It also helps that they’re so approachable, supportive, and responsive 8) I can’t thank Joshua enough for the support he’s given me. Of course, I also have to thank Infinite Arms for opportunities like this one It also doesn’t hurt to have a $100 bill to use as a size reference in the pics

Work was not fun this week. Yeah, yeah, I can already hear you saying that it wouldn’t be called work if it were fun, but it still wasn’t. Putting in about 35 hours of overtime last month and another extra 8 hours last Saturday has gotten me rather farther along the path to burnout than I really prefer to be. I need this weekend

Thankfully, I’ve got the great guys at Infinite Arms / New Frontier Armory to go hang out with when I need to decompress

11 June 2010 - Infinite Arms PPSh-41 submachine gun

Being a licensed manufacturer, Infinite Arms can make brand new machine guns like this PPSh-41. Not all of the parts are new, but the registered portion – the receiver – is a brand new part. This type of submachine gun was developed in 1941 in the Soviet Union and was widely used in WWII. It’s definitely not light and because of this and the 7.62 x 25mm pistol caliber it’s chambered in, it’s said to be very controllable in full-auto fire. What’s really cool is that if all goes as planned I’ll have the chance to try out this very gun on 3 July 2010 I might not be allowed to own this gun, but thanks to Infinite Arms, I have the opportunity to get acquainted with a very cool piece of history

11 June 2010 - Infinite Arms / New Frontier Armory - Silencerco .22 Sparrow

Most people think that silencers (or suppressors – the BATFE uses both terms) are illegal. That’s just not true for most places in the United States. As a matter of fact, private ownership of suppressors is legal in AL, AR, AK, AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, NC, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, and WY.

You can’t just go down to the local gun store or hardware store, drop money on the counter, and walk out with your new equipment but it’s not all that difficult either. You just fill out the forms, get ‘em signed by the Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) in your area, get fingerprinted, photographed, and send the whole packet into the BATFE along with a check, money order, or credit card number to pay the $200 tax on the transfer of ownership. The feds run a background check which is pretty much the same as the one for any firearm purchase from a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) wh0 deals in firearms, affix a tax stamp to the paperwork, and send it back to your Class III FFL and you can take it home.

There are quite a few misconceptions about owning items regulated under the National Firearms Act of 1934 (AKA the NFA). They think the feds can come into your home at any time, that you have to keep a record of how many rounds you fire, that they can only be used at approved ranges, and all sorts of other notions. None of that is true. It doesn’t matter if you own an NFA controlled item – the feds (and any other law enforcement agency) still need a warrant. You can use your machine gun, silencer, short barreled rifle, short barreled shotgun or Any Other Weapon (AOW – generally disguised guns or smooth bore pistols) anywhere it’s legal to shoot. The only real restriction is on interstate transportation of the NFA controlled items and even then it’s easy to do. You just have to get permission from the BATFE by faxing in a form.

The silencer you see in this post is a Silencerco Sparrow which is made to be used on rimfire guns like .22 and .17 caliber. It’s full-auto rated in case you own a registered machine gun in one of those calibers.

11 June 2010 - Infinite Arms / New Frontier Armory - Silencerco .22 Sparrow disassembled

I’ve been planning on purchasing a suppressor for quite some time now. After shooting some of them, I’ve been hooked I hate hearing protection (plugs muffle everything and muffs get all sweaty and muffle or distort sound) and these make all those problems disappear. Eventually I want to get a .45 1911 with a suppressor along with a silencer for my PSL, but that would be prohibitively expensive. The .45, threaded barrel, and suppressor would be $2,000 if I keep the pistol cheap

There are many reasons to own a suppressor. They make shooting much more pleasant not only from the standpoint of noise, but also by reducing felt recoil. .22 rounds may not be all that noisy from a rifle, but they’re FREAKING LOUD when it comes to pistols. Rimfire suppressors aren’t all that expensive and with muzzle mounted units like the Sparrow I can use the same can on both my 10/22 and a pistol to be purchased later. I’ve shot some of these cans that are so quiet that the loudest thing you hear is the hammer hitting the firing pin

The downside of rimfire suppressors is that rimfire ammo is dirty in a couple of ways. First you have the carbon and debris from the burning powder which can accumulate on the internal parts. The other thing you have is a spray of molten lead coming out of the barrel of the gun because rimfire bullets aren’t copper jacketed like most centerfire is. This mist of liquid lead particles cools and hardens on the internal parts of the silencer. The combined accumulation of carbon and lead causes suppressors to become heavier and due to decreased internal volume they also become louder. Sealed suppressors have to be shipped back to the manufacturer for cleaning which takes paperwork from the BATFE, time, and money (usually about $120) about every 1,000 rounds. I don’t know about you, but that’s like an afternoon of shooting to me.

There are quite a few “user serviceable” cans out there for centerfire and rimfire these days. The problem is that they all have the baffles in contact with the outer tube as well as threads for attaching the end caps on that tube to attach the end caps. You have to unscrew the end caps and then pull the core out against the accumulated lead and carbon to clean it all. If you damage the registered part (the one with the serial number – usually that tube), you’re on the hook for another $200 transfer tax payment to the BATFE no matter if the new one is free or not.

Silencerco went a different route. As you can see in the picture above, the half shells go over the one piece (monolithic) baffle stack which is then slid into the outer tube before the end cap is screwed onto the baffle stack. There are no threads on that serial numbered part (you can’t damage it with cross threading) and it’s never touched by the flame, carbon, or lead from the ammunition as it’s fired so it’s very unlikely to be damaged. Adding to the ease of servicing, the half shells can be pried away laterally from the baffles so you don’t have to try to drag the stack out against the crud and the threads never come in contact with any nasty stuff either. Because that serial numbered part is the only thing that has paperwork hassles associated with it, replacing a damaged end cap or baffle stack is as easy as shipping anything else.

I’ll say right up front that the Silencerco Sparrow is not the least expensive rimfire suppressor on the market. I’ve seen new rimfire suppressors from other manufacturers which cost as little as $175 while the MSRP on the Sparrow is around $450. I was quoted $375 for this Sparrow yesterday at Infinite Arms which is of course subject to change Normally I try to stay as inexpensive as possible, but this is one time where spending extra money is worth it. With a $200 transfer tax that has to be paid every time ownership changes, nobody sells their used silencers. Why would you when you’re talking about something that’s this inexpensive with that much tax on it? The way the design of the Sparrow minimizes the chance of damage to the registered part while enhancing the end user serviceability is enough for me to allocate the extra funding for this model

11 June 2010 - Infinite Arms / New Frontier Armory - Silencerco .22 Sparrow monolithic baffle

I’ve talked about the baffle stack and I thought I’d give you a better look at that part of this unit. By allowing the propellant gas from the gunshot to expand and cool in a controlled manner while slowing its exit, the silencer keeps the noise down. It’s a lot like the muffler on your car. Mufflers usually have baffles which work in a similar manner – they slow and control the exhaust pulses from your engine.

The bullet passes from left to right in the pictures above. As it passes through the hole in the center it allows the gas to enter the next chamber. You can see that they’ve done some research and development on the cross sectional shape. Instead of a slant baffle, they’ve gone with this shape to decrease the possibility of bullets tumbling and causing baffle strikes. It also helps to keep the shift in point of impact vs. point of aim to a minimum. This can be a big problem with some silencers – you put your suppressor on the gun and the bullet hits in a different place relative to where you were aiming. That’s not good

11 June 2010 - Infinite Arms / New Frontier Armory - Silencerco .22 Sparrow stainless steel threads

This stainless steel thread insert at the base of the suppressor is where the silencer meets the gun barrel. The rest of the unit is aluminum to keep weight down to an incredible 4.7 ounces. That’s important to keep your gun comfortable and balanced in your hand, but steel is ideal for the required strength at the interface point.

The other thing to notice are the scallops machined into the end cap. Those are there so you can use a special tool to help take the unit apart. Most other suppressors need a specialized tool to be able to take them apart, but it’s really optional on the Sparrow due to its design. They say they sell very few of them.

11 June 2010 - Infinite Arms / New Frontier Armory - Silencerco .22 Sparrow

OK, I just had to do a close up shot of the logo and markings. Even though it’s still in the store’s inventory and I’ve been told not to worry about showing a serial number, I fuzzed it in the picture for the privacy of whoever buys this one in the end.

That’s all I’ve got for this post. Here’s hopin’ y’all weren’t too bored and maybe that you learned something from all my ramblings You’d can bet I’ll have a post up sometime in the next year or so when I get one of these for my own personal use

I also have to say thanks again to Infinite Arms for giving me the chance to see, handle, and photograph all this cool gear

Have a great weekend everyone

The first couple of pics today are just basically local shots as I was out and about during my 30 minute lunch. No, nothing special, but they’re a view most people won’t ever see of Las Vegas

15 January 2010 - Citadel Gun and Safe - Great deals on ammo

15 January 2010 - Citadel Gun and Safe - Lots of good stuff!

After work, I headed on over to Citadel Gun and Safe for some ammo and other supplies. I’ll bet everyone here is just floored that I might be found in such an establishment Well, I’m planning on heading over to the shooting park this weekend (likely tomorrow) for some fun with firearms and I’ve been sadly neglecting my AK-47 and I’ve decided it’s time to get it properly sighted in for later use. Citadel probably has the best deals on 7.62×39 ammo for my AK-47 that I know of in this town which is why I made the trip. I’m now the proud owner of another 60 rounds of ammo for my wonderful AK-47 I also know for a fact that they carry just about everything that Otis makes for gun cleaning, so I made sure to pick up some of their specialized patches while I was there

To tell the truth, I’ve only ever shot that rifle at paper once. The problems have been cost and range. The cost is because of the price of the cheap ammo like Wolf and Silver Bear vs. something like Winchester. I can’t shoot the cheap stuff indoors because it’s steel jacketed and the range owners can’t tell if it’s steel core which would go through their backstop. Winchester (range safe) runs about $15 for 20 rounds while Wolf and Silver Bear are going for about $6.50 for the same number of rounds. The other problem is that the farthest I can shoot it indoors is about 35 yards if I’m lucky. This is a rifle. It’s not the most accurate bullet launcher ever devised by any means, but I want to go to at least 50 yards if not 100 or more. The shooting park will let me sight it in correctly and will therefore allow me to set stuff up even better in the desert

Speaking to the pics above, the first is self explanatory, but the second is Citadel’s rifle and pistol section. I can’t get all the guns in one pic, even with a panorama, but you get the point, right ? Click that panorama for full size if you like hardware like I do

15 January 2010 - If you were wondering, this is on my Christmas list

Do you have someone in your life who’s just incredibly difficult to buy for? Do they seem to have everything? Well, look no further when their birthday or Christmas rolls around. Just buy ‘em a three person dune buggy with a pair of machineguns and rocket launchers

I told the guys at Citadel that I’d love to borrow this nice little means of conveyance for a day so I could drive it up and down the border with California Just remember, if you’re trying to figure out what to get me for Christmas…

15 January 2010 - Kel-Tec - Tough choices!!!

One thing I made sure to check while I was at Citadel was their selection of concealed carry guns. The gun on the left is a Kel-Tec P-11 and that’s a P-3AT on the right. The P-11 carries more rounds as it has a double stack magazine, but the P-3AT (along with the PF-9 which is about the same size) is much more concealable and weighs much less, even when it’s empty. Even though it’s slightly heavier and larger than the other option, I’m seriously considering that P-11.

15 January 2010 - Gotta love Las Vegas at night 8)

This is the view you see when you exit Citadel. Yes, I love my adopted hometown

15 January 2010 - One cool Savannah monitor lizard

My last stop tonight was over at Exotic Pets for some Ziva food. The cool lizard you see is a Savannah monitor and is one of the most chilled out, tame reptiles I’ve ever seen. Savannah monitors eat mice, large insects, and prepared commercial diets. They do need some specialized care items and I really don’t want the expense, but I wouldn’t mind having one of these guys

So, yeah, it was a pretty good day Here’s hoping y’all have a great weekend
