Forum Decommissioned

After much consideration, I have decided to decommission the forum. While the idea sounded great and I love the forum on F-16.net, it didn’t work out. There were entirely too many spam posts and registrations. I simply do not have the time right now to add forum administration to the list of the rest of the stuff that I have to do.

While the forum has been decommissioned, you might say it’s in mothballs. It’s still there, just disabled and I can bring it back if I decide to with minimal effort.

Not having to deal with the constant need to approve new user accounts (of which only one had ever posted a substantive post or reply) will free up my time for other activities – like running this blog, working, eating, and maybe even (gasp!) sleeping  !

I thank everyone who may have tried to register for legitimate reasons for your support and I apologize to anyone who didn’t get to post legitimate posts.

Coronado Amphibious Base Barracks - Google Earth photo

I drove past the Navy’s amphibious warfare base every day for several years and never saw this. I never knew it existed. It turns out that very few people knew about it and fewer thought it was worth the money to change the appearance.

Unmanned Aerial Resupply

Defense Tech: Drone Cargo Drops

The Universal Aerial Delivery Dispenser is an underwing bomb-like pod that can carry as much as will fit in its nearly five foot-long, eight inch-diameter canister. Weighing in at a bantam 40 pounds unloaded, the “U-ADD” as it’s called, can carry a load of ammo, first aid equipment or other cargo to a pre-selected GPS coordinate. After the UAV drops the canister, a parachute deploys to ease its landing.

Add another item to the arsenal of cool stuff 8)

Before now, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) were either reconnaisance platforms or more recently attack platforms. Now they can support the troops on the ground in other ways as well. Need some ammo? How about medical supplies? Gotcha covered :) ! I can see these canisters being pre-loaded with supplies and loaded onto UAVs which would loiter over or near the battlefield for quick resupply missions on the fly.

Of course, they can also be used for dropping sonobouys and can carry a sort of cluster bomb making UAVs that much more versatile.

Political Disconnect – Pathetic Congressional Approval Ratings Evidence of Larger Troubles

Stop The ACLU » Blog Archive » If Congressional Approval Falls Below 10%, Do We Get to Have Another Revolution?

The latest Zogby poll shows that only 11 percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing. This is contrasted with Bush’s underwhelming 29% approval rating. These polls show that Americans of all political stripes are losing faith in their government. Congress’ all time low (prior to this poll) is 18% approval. Do we get to disband the government and write a new Constitution if it falls below 10%? For comparison, most foreign governments suffer a coup at these approval ratings.(emphasis added)

The poll shows that the average American and the average politician are simply disconnected. The concerns of the average American aren’t represented inside the Beltway and it shows that what’s huge news on the cable news channels and in the latest partisan shouting matches isn’t what matters most to Americans. And America is fed up.

I’ve gotta hand it to the author – he’s got a pretty good handle on things here. Politicians these days are demonstrably disconnected from their constituents these days. Instead of concerning themselves with the concerns of those they represent, they chase after every dollar they can so that they can afford to campaign. The physical distance from those they’re supposed to represent is another matter.

Israeli Airstrike on Syria Has Iran Running Scared

SILENCE IN SYRIA, PANIC IN IRAN

One of India’s top ranking generals assigned to liaise with the Iranian military recently returned to New Delhi from several days in Tehran – in a state of complete amazement.

“Everyone in the government and military can only talk of one thing,” he reports. “No matter who I talked to, all they could do was ask me, over and over again, ‘Do you think the Americans will attack us?’ ‘When will the Americans attack us?’ ‘Will the Americans attack us in a joint operation with the Israelis?’ How massive will the attack be?’ on and on, endlessly. The Iranians are in a state of total panic.”

And that was before September 6. Since then, it’s panic-squared in Tehran. The mullahs are freaking out in fear. Why? Because of the silence in Syria.

On September 6, Israeli Air Force F-15 and F-16s conducted a devastating attack on targets deep inside Syria near the city of Dayr az-Zawr. Israel’s military censors have muzzled the Israeli media, enforcing an extraordinary silence about the identity of the targets. Massive speculation in the world press has followed, such as Brett Stephens’ Osirak II? in yesterday’s (9/18) Wall St. Journal.

I’d love to post the entirety of Dr. Jack Wheeler’s genius, but he appears to make at least part of his living from his website as it requires a paid subscription to view the whole article and I’m not going to take away from that. The quote above is publicly available on his page without subscription.

What it comes down to is this – Syria has been spending huge sums of money on Russian air defense systems and Israel calmly strolled in, bombed the *&^% out of a facility near Iraq, and strolled out again without tripping Syria’s air defense systems.

More GREAT Aviation Music – This Time For Civilians!

Airspeed: “Hey, Don!” and Oshkosh 2007 Wrap-Up

I’ve got quite a few feeds that I subscribe to, one of which is Cap Blog. It was there that I happened upon a link to Airspeed which I think I’ll have to subscribe to, as well :) .

One of the links on that page went to a song – First Solo (Hey Don!) by Steve Tupper who authors Airspeed. This is the NSFW version  . I haven’t laughed that hard since the first time I listened to Dos Gringos  ! Of course, there’s also the safe version here.

One of these days I swear I’m going to get that pilot’s license and I swear I’m going to play this on the way home from my first solo flight 8) .

Hat tip to Cap Blog :)
