Yet Another Reason I Don’t Live in San Diego Anymore

San Diego. The weather is gorgeous nearly year round. 80 degrees is a heat wave and people bundle up if it drops below about 65 degrees. Sure, there’s the cloudy “marine layer” overnight near the coast, but that’s not year round. What is year round are the absolutely awesome beaches. And the mountains. And the nifty tourist stuff like Balboa Park and the San Diego Maritime Museum.

Now that we’ve established a few of the reasons San Diego is considered to be awesome as a place to live, a few of you out there might be wondering why I chose to move to Las Vegas, NV after 28 years in San Diego and why I haven’t moved back. After all, Las Vegas can hit 126 degrees in the summer, get down into the teens in the winter, and wind storms with gusts topping 60 MPH aren’t all that uncommon. We even got about four inches of snow in December! Sure, I like the food and the shows. It’s great to have the option of going gambling and doing it right every once in a while. But that’s not why I haven’t moved back to San Diego.

Here’s one of the reasons I haven’t moved back to my old home town:

Fox News

“On Good Friday we had an employee from San Diego County come to our house, and inform us that the bible study that we were having was a religious assembly, and in violation of the code in the county.” David Jones told FOX News.

“We told them this is not really a religious assembly — this is just a bible study with friends. We have a meal, we pray, that was all,” Jones said.

A few days later, the couple received a written warning that cited “unlawful use of land,” ordering them to either “stop religious assembly or apply for a major use permit,” the couple’s attorney Dean Broyles told San Diego news station 10News.

But the major use permit could cost the Jones’ thousands of dollars just to have a few friends over.

From 10 News in San Diego

The county employee notified the couple that the small bible study, with an average of 15 people attending, was in violation of county regulations, according to Broyles.

Broyles said a few days later the couple received a written warning that listed “unlawful use of land” and told them to “stop religious assembly or apply for a major use permit” — a process that could cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Yep, you read that correctly. The County of San Diego wants these people to shell out big bucks for a Major Use Permit because a few friends meet for bible study.

I’ll deal with the heat and lack of a beach.

Semper Apollo – Jet Noise is OK

No, I didn’t make these videos. That distinction belongs to Semper Apollo

I really like the idea of leaving out the overdubbed music on videos like these. The only bad part is that you can’t feel the sound like you can when you’re there.

Crank up the volume

Enjoy 8)

Notes from the YouTube page:

No music. No narrator. No storyline. Just a lot of afterburners, vapor and jet noise. Enjoy.

Notes from the YouTube page:

Here it is…the second installment of the loudest series on earth. Get your afterburner fix with Eagles, Vipers, Baby Hornets, Super Hornets, Phantoms, Tomcats and the Raptor. Turn it UP!

Notes from the YouTube page:

The last one of the series for 2007. The F-22′s power loop (kulbit), the Harrier’s hover turn, the Strike Eagle’s strafe pass, the Super Hornet’s tailstand and many more are shown here.

Notes from the YouTube page:

It’s back! The loudest video series on the internet returns with all new footage from the 2007 season. See your favorite noisemakers like the F-16 Viper, F-22 Raptor, F/A-18E/F Rhino, F-15 Eagle, F-15E Strike Eagle, A-10 Hog and F/A-18 Hornet and some rare ones such as the KC-135 and F-117 Nighthawk. America’s two favorite jet teams are also represented as there are several passes from the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds. There’s even a one of a kind jet powered sailplane. So turn up the speakers and wake the neighbors because the sound of freedom isn’t quiet!

Notes from the YouTube page:

America’s favorite aerial ambassadors do more than demonstrate precision and professionalism. They also make a lot of noise. The loudest clips of the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds from 2007.

So as the TBird boss would say at this point…Speakers on ready now volume coming up!

Picture(s) A Day – 27 May 2009

Yes, I’m up a bit late, but it’s for a good purpose – I’ve been working on another slide show movie

Still, I owe y’all some pictures don’t I? In that case, let’s get to ‘em :)

I saw this Jeep when I stopped at the gas station on my way to work and just had to get a picture :P

Due to lack of funding, it’s been several months since Trevor (yes, for those who don’t know I named my car after a character in a Jimmy Buffett book) has had a bath and I just couldn’t stand it anymore.

27 May 2009 - Flash flood retention basin park

27 May 2009 - Flash flood retention basin park

I’ve shown pictures of one of these before, but it was a bit different. There are quite a few flash flood retention basins around town to keep more stuff from washing away than can be helped when it rains in the monsoon season. I’ve seen over two inches of rain fall in about 30 minutes and it all has to go somewhere. I like this idea as long as no rain is forecast.

27 May 2009 - Right across the street from the park

Just across the street from the park, there’s another retention basin that hasn’t been “improved.”

And one more taken especially for Kath  Here’s another street in northwest Las Vegas. I think it’s pretty interesting how different all those streets can look in this diverse city :)

Here’s hoping you like these :D I’ll try to get the new slide show up soon, but I’ll also be posting the pictures which is going to take time. You see, the website can only upload and deal with up to two megabyte photos when using the blog interface. I want people to be able to see the real full size version of each picture, so I’m going to have to upload a different way and create other size versions of some of the pictures…

Anyway, I’m off to catch the late show on the backs of my eyelids.

Have a GREAT day

Picture(s) A Day – On YouTube!

Not all that long ago, I figured out that Windows Movie Maker can do some cool things with pictures. Of course, this gets even better with YouTube’s audio swap feature which lets you substitute music for the current audio on the videos you upload. Because the picture slide show movies made with Windows Movie Maker have no sound, this provides a legal way to add a nice soundtrack :)

Here are my first three attempts at making worthwhile video slide shows with what I think are workable soundtracks 8)

19 April 2009

Original post here

OK, so I finally got the heck out of my apartment today and attempted to go have some fun :) I’d say the mission was a success 8)

Yes, there are a few more pictures today than usual – I hope that’s not a problem for anyone :P As usual, click on each picture to see the full size version in a new window

I still can’t find my darned digital camera, so all of these were taken with my cellphone’s camera. I really do need to get a new digital camera sometime soon as my poor Sanyo has some sort of dirt inbetween the lens elements that shows up when it’s zoomed to telephoto and would cost more to repair than it would cost to replace it.

With all of that out of the way, here’s the pictures for 19 April 2009 :D

6 May 2009

Original post here

I got a case of cabin fever tonight in the apartment. I just couldn’t stand to be cooped up anymore. So I did what anyone would do in Las Vegas when this happens – I went for a nice, therapeutic drive down the Las Vegas Strip :D

I wound up at Bellagio thinking of how nice it would be to watch the fountains. I got a bit sidetracked inside at the Conservatory

I also got just a bit snap happy with my camera phone, too

24 May 2009

Original post here

I had planned to try to get rained on today, but alas it just wasn’t in the cards. The closest decent storm on the radar was about five and a half hours north by car. I don’t think so :P If I’m going to drive that far, I’m going to San Diego :D

Plan B was to head up on Mt. Charleston which is about a 45 minute drive northwest from home. I’ve been up there once before, but I think it’s going to be a more frequent trip come summertime. You see, up at 8,000 to 9,000 feet it’s between twenty and thirty degrees cooler than the sizzling valley floor. Believe me when I say that when the overnight lows are in the mid nineties and the daytime highs are over a hundred and ten degrees, seventy five to eighty degrees feels both downright chilly and incredibly welcome 8)

So up to Mt. Charleston I drove…

I plan on doing more of these in the future 8)

Please let me know what you think, OK

Tyson V. Rininger is TVR Photography. I admire his work and his skill. While equipment plays a part, skill is more important.

I just hope I can do as well someday.

I’m Drooling Again…

I’m getting ready to fill out and send in my application for a Curio and Relics Federal Firearms License. I figured some advice would be a good idea, so I went on over to the J&G Sales web page. They had the right links to the BATFE’s page, but I also clicked on another link and found something I would love to own but can’t afford

Yes, that’s an honest to God M16 rifle. It’s a machinegun and will fire full auto. It’s legal to buy in my state as well as in Arizona, but there’s only one problem – the $15,495.00 price tag

Memorial Day 2009 – Missing Man Formation

I took this video at Nellis Air Force Base a couple of years ago during an airshow. I had posted the video on YouTube a while back, but that was before I knew how to add titles. I thought this version would be acceptable as my personal contribution on Memorial Day

The missing man formation is flown to honor fallen comrades. As the formation passes overhead, one of the aircraft pulls up and flies skyward symbolizing the person who has been lost.

This formation is usually flown with four aircraft in a “finger four” formation. The four aircraft are two elements of two aircraft with on aircraft leading, one on his left wing, and two on his right wing. When the missing man formation is flown from the finger four, the aircraft immediately to the leader’s right will pull up. The Thunderbirds fly this maneuver from their six aircraft delta formation, but the aircraft immediately to the leader’s right is still the aircraft that pulls up.

This video is dedicated to all those men and women who have fallen over the years in the service of the United States of America.

Captain Mark P. Graziano

Captain Mark P. Graziano

Captain Mark P. Graziano

Captain Graziano’s friends and family have put together a memorial web page – click here to visit it.

From the official United States Air Force website:

5/22/2009 – EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., (AFNS) — An Air Force test pilot student died May 21 when his jet trainer crashed north of Edwards Air Force Base.

Captain Mark P. Graziano, 30, died when the T-38A Talon he was piloting crashed about nine miles north of the base here, near California City, Calif. Captain Graziano was assigned to the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School here, where he was undergoing training to become a test pilot.

His crew member, Maj. Lee V. Jones, was injured upon ejecting from the aircraft. He was transported to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, Calif., where he is listed in stable condition. Major Jones, a senior navigator, is also assigned to the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, undergoing test navigator training.

“We are shocked and saddened by this sudden loss and our hearts and prayers go out to Mark’s family and loved ones,” said Col. Terry M. Luallen, U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School commandant. “We are doing all we can to support Mark’s family during this trying time.”

At approximately 1:15 p.m. yesterday the base was notified that a TPS aircraft had gone down near California City. Emergency responders from the base and Kern County arrived at the scene where they found Jones near the crash site, and transported him to Kern Medical Center. Graziano was pronounced dead at the scene.

A board of officers is investigating the accident.
