All I wanted to do after work today was come home and vegetate. It’s been a heckuva week at work. With that in mind, I hope y’all understand if I dig back into the archives for something you haven’t seen yet. The F4U is one of my all time favorite warbirds with its inverted gull wings, big engine, and its look that just screams WARPLANE!!! All that just adds to the sense of history these great planes exude You might have seen the old TV series “Black Sheep Squadron” about VMF 214 in WWII with Robert Conrad as Pappy Boyington. I feel very lucky to have met Maj. Boyington when I was pretty little, but at least I remember it I may never get to fly a Corsair, but at least I get to look at ‘em Have a Corsair day
Nope, it ain’t all that exciting – I’ll give you that Just another day looking out the window at the Sheep Range of mountains north of Las Vegas on an August evening Have more fun than this Sunday was not exactly what I’d call fun. I had to go into work for a few hours to work on a project. As I’ve said before, I could use the money. Still, I value my personal time. I just try to look on the bright side – I got some $$$ and a couple of cool pictures Sometimes it takes staying at work on a Sunday until after 1900 hours to get a cool picture 8) Click on the pic for the full size version – it’s BIG Take care OK, time to post one last entry before I go get some much needed sleep Yep, it’s time for another Buffett song Tonight, we go all the way back to 1974 and Jimmy’s fourth album – A1A. Most all Parrotheads know this song by heart, but most other people have never heard of it. The song is Tin Cup Chalice. I found out a bit about this song from Buffettworld.com:
While I’ve never had that experience, I have watched many a sunset from the coast of California and I can appreciate the sentiment So how does the song go? Wait no longer – here’s the lyrics
Yeah, that pretty much sums up about how I feel sometimes about a few places in San Diego like La Jolla, Coronado, Crystal Pier, Ocean Beach Pier, the Embarcadero by the Star of India and the Midway, and of course Captain’s Cove Hasta mañana, everyone – take care and try to have some fun OK, I’m going to say it now – posting is going to be very light for a while around here. At least through tomorrow. Maybe Wednesday. You see, we have a bit of a project going on at work that’s taking days. Without going into too much detail for the sake of job preservation, the techs are helping out with a big company project and management is stepping up with overtime to make it happen. I put in 5.5 hours of overtime on Sunday and another 3 hours today/tonight. There will be more overtime tomorrow. The upside of this is that it will bring in MONEY Seeing as how I need to replenish my ammo supply, I desperately want to pick up a shotgun, Kel-Tec PF-9, a concealed carry permit, more MONEY is a good thing. I also need to get my butt to Utah, Arizona, and California which isn’t very inexpensive, either And yes, Kath, I still want a Utilikilt and an Xootr, even if they’re on the back burner so to speak So my apologies and thanks for understanding go out to Kath, Glenn, Luke, and all the rest of my readers out there – I’ll be back to full speed soon Yesterday was an absolute blast Two of my coworkers, Digitarii and James, one of Digitarii’s friends from California, and yours truly took a little trip out to the desert northwest of town. Our intentions were to make lots of noise, make our shoulders sore, have a good time, and not get anyone hurt or killed. Happily, we succeeded James and I may just be humble, gun loving computer techs, but Digitarii is a former soldier in the U.S. Army and his friend is former U.S. Navy and was a range master in the service. Rest assured that between the four of us we did have a clue as to what we were doing I have to go into work this afternoon, so I can’t spend as much time on this post as I’d like to. I’ve done my best to make sure the captions speak for themselves, but feel free to speak up in the comments if you have any questions Right then, on to the pictures
No, Digitarii’s not his given name, but it’s the screen name he blogs under and I respect people’s privacy. He’s wanted to go shooting for quite some time now, so what better occasion than a visit from a friend who hails from my former home state? Digitarii loved the K31 and I can’t say I blame him – it’s a heck of a fun gun to shoot
![]() 22 August 2009 - The H&K locks open on an empty magazine and the spent shell casing can be seen in the air on the left side of the picture Yo may have seen James in another post or two around this blog, but you haven’t seen him with his pride and joy yet
![]() 22 August 2009 - Digitarii giving my AK-47 a workout - You can see the shell casings in the air and the action open after it's ejected a spent casing and about to feed a fresh round into the chamber My AK-47 got quite a workout! This is probably my favorite picture of it in action yet
![]() 22 August 2009 - Yes, my glasses are askew, but shooting both handguns at the same time was fun! My Hi-Point C9 is on the left and James' H&K USP Compact is on the right. While not really accurate or useful in everyday life, shooting two handguns at the same time is pretty darn fun
![]() 22 August 2009 - That was a full can of soda at one time. One shot from a Mosin Nagant split it in half! ![]() 22 August 2009 - Here's both halves of the can. That's Digitarii's friend from California on the left. Full soda cans are no match for the Mosin Nagant
Of course, you’ve gotta have the cool picture with the AK-47
![]() 22 August 2009 - Digitarii's friend and I go at it with the Mosin Nagants while James hangs back by the truck Havin’ fun and makin’ noise in the Nevada desert with a pair of Mosin Nagant rifles – definitely a good time
![]() 22 August 2009 - Digitarii's friend dual weilding the handguns - You can see the slide on the C9 in his left hand back under recoil with the brass in the air while he takes aim with James' H&K USP Compact Here we have Digitarii’s friend going at the targets with both handguns. I love to catch the slide back on recoil and the brass in the air like this We can’t end this post without one other thing – video! Yes, we have video of Digitarii going rapid fire with the AK-47 as you can only do out in the middle of nowhere From my YouTube description: Here’s a big thanks to everyone who made this shooting trip happen and to Digitarii for helping out with the camera duties Have fun, everyone Yes, I know I’m late, but at least I’m getting something done about it
With a planned shooting expedition on Saturday, my coworker James and I headed down to a couple of gun shops on an ammo run after work on Friday. I wasn’t expecting to see a car from one of the dealerships I used to work at After grabbing the ammo, we stopped over at Paris Las Vegas as we were in the neighborhood and I wanted some good, fresh bread 8) Yes, I’d really like to go back there some time when I’m really rich – the food is fantastic I’ve gotta knock out another post for yesterday, so my apologies for keeping this one so short Have a GREAT day The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning today. Really? You mean you didn’t think we could figure that out on our own? Nothing really all that surprising or spectacular – that’s scheduled for Saturday
Just driving up Lake Mead towards Cimarron here – looking at the mountains, blue sky, puffy clouds and one big @$$ sun A bit after 2100 hours and I was getting seriously hungry. Yes, it was still 100° out. I can’t wait for fall Have fun y’all I’ve always said (well at least since I had a clue about it) that Las Vegas is a land of extremes. Extreme excess on the Strip, extreme displays of bad driving, and extreme weather. Take the upcoming forecast: Pay close attention to Friday and Saturday, particularly the high temperature. Yep, it’s supposed to be about 14° cooler on Saturday. Not that I mind in the least |

Pics From Reader Glenn’s Time Workin’ on the Railroad!
So I got this email from one of my loyal readers who’s also a frequent commenter the other day that really brightened my mood in a big way
You bet I’m gonna post ‘em

I have to confess that I wasn’t much of a railfan before Glenn came around, but I’m coming around quite quickly
I really love this stuff – the scenery, the machinery, the wide open spaces I’m still learning about all over again after many years of staying in San Diego without much travel – it’s just great
Y’all might have a different opinion, but these pictures made me think of a certain country song, especially coming from a Veteran of the United States Armed Forces. If you like country music at all, you’ll probably love “It’s America” by Rodney Atkins!
Here’s the song via YouTube:
Yep, railroads and guys like Glenn are a couple of the things that keep America moving
Glenn, I have to say thanks for sharing these pictures and for your service to the United States
