(Archive) Picture A Day – 25 August 2009

25 August 2009 - F4U Corsair at Aviation Nation 2006

25 August 2009 - F4U Corsair at Aviation Nation 2006

All I wanted to do after work today was come home and vegetate.  It’s been a heckuva week at work.

With that in mind, I hope y’all understand if I dig back into the archives for something you haven’t seen yet.  The F4U is one of my all time favorite warbirds with its inverted gull wings, big engine, and its look that just screams WARPLANE!!!  All that just adds to the sense of history these great planes exude :)

You might have seen the old TV series “Black Sheep Squadron” about VMF 214 in WWII with Robert Conrad as Pappy Boyington.  I feel very lucky to have met Maj. Boyington when I was pretty little, but at least I remember it

I may never get to fly a Corsair, but at least I get to look at ‘em 8)

Have a Corsair day

Nope, it ain’t all that exciting – I’ll give you that    But that’s the reality of workin’ overtime :P

Just another day looking out the window at the Sheep Range of mountains north of Las Vegas on an August evening 8)

Have more fun than this

Picture(s) A Day – 23 August 2009

Sunday was not exactly what I’d call fun.  I had to go into work for a few hours to work on a project.

As I’ve said before, I could use the money.  Still, I value my personal time.  I just try to look on the bright side – I got some $$$ and a couple of cool pictures 8)

Sometimes it takes staying at work on a Sunday until after 1900 hours to get a cool picture 8)  Click on the pic for the full size version – it’s BIG

Take care :)

Last Post of the Day – Jimmy Buffett – Tin Cup Chalice

OK, time to post one last entry before I go get some much needed sleep :)

Yep, it’s time for another Buffett song    I know, y’all are just shocked that I might post something about Jimmy :P

Tonight, we go all the way back to 1974 and Jimmy’s fourth album – A1A.  Most all Parrotheads know this song by heart, but most other people have never heard of it.  The song is Tin Cup Chalice.

I found out a bit about this song from Buffettworld.com:

“This was my first Key West song. I was running from a bad marriage and a trail of debt, and wound up at the end of America. Nobody cared about either there, and they took the time to applaud the sunset at the end of the day. It was a place for me to hang my hat for awhile.” – Jimmy

While I’ve never had that experience, I have watched many a sunset from the coast of California and I can appreciate the sentiment :)

So how does the song go?  Wait no longer – here’s the lyrics

Song: Tin Cup Chalice
Album: A1A
By: Jimmy Buffett

I want to go back to the island,
Where the shrimp boats tie up to the pilin’.
Give me oysters and beer for dinner ev’ry day of the year,
And I’ll feel fine, I’ll feel fine.

Chorus:
‘Cause I want to be there,
I want to go back down and lie beside the sea there.
With a tin cup for a chalice
Fill it up with good red wine,
And I’m-a chewin’ on a honeysuckle vine.

Yeah, now the sun goes slidin’ ‘cross the water;
Sailboats, they go searchin’ for the breeze.
Salt air it ain’t thin,
It can stick right to your skin,
And make you feel fine.
It makes you feel fine.

And I want to be there,
I want to go back down and get high beside the sea there
With a tin cup for a chalice
Fill it up with good red wine,
And I’m-a chewin’ on a honeysuckle vine.

Yes, and now you heard my strange proposal;
Get that Packard up and let’s move.
I want to be there before the day
Tries to steal away and leave us behind;
I’ve made up my mind;

And I want to be there,
I want to go back down and die beside the sea there
With a tin cup for a chalice
Fill it up with good red wine,
And I’m-a chewin’ on a honeysuckle vine.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up about how I feel sometimes about a few places in San Diego like La Jolla, Coronado, Crystal Pier, Ocean Beach Pier, the Embarcadero by the Star of India and the Midway, and of course Captain’s Cove 8)

Hasta mañana, everyone – take care and try to have some fun

Pics From Reader Glenn’s Time Workin’ on the Railroad!

So I got this email from one of my loyal readers who’s also a frequent commenter the other day that really brightened my mood in a big way :D

Jeff,
Two are along US 287 near Quanah and Childress, TX on the Red River Sub.
The other two are in Wyoming along the Bighorn River on the Casper Sub. Old CB&Q
And I figured one each of Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier. Both were taken from the East. The one of Mt. Hood, I took from near Wishram, WA waiting to survey for the train. The one of Mt.Rainier, I took from the Selah Rest Area just north of Yakima. They are a couple of years old but you can use them if you like.
Glenn

You bet I’m gonna post ‘em

I have to confess that I wasn’t much of a railfan before Glenn came around, but I’m coming around quite quickly :)

I really love this stuff – the scenery, the machinery, the wide open spaces I’m still learning about all over again after many years of staying in San Diego without much travel – it’s just great 8)

Y’all might have a different opinion, but these pictures made me think of a certain country song, especially coming from a Veteran of the United States Armed Forces.  If you like country music at all, you’ll probably love “It’s America” by Rodney Atkins!

Here’s the song via YouTube:

Yep, railroads and guys like Glenn are a couple of the things that keep America moving 8)

Glenn, I have to say thanks for sharing these pictures and for your service to the United States :)

GOOD GREIF – TALK ABOUT BUSY!!!

OK, I’m going to say it now – posting is going to be very light for a while around here. At least through tomorrow.  Maybe Wednesday.

You see, we have a bit of a project going on at work that’s taking days.  Without going into too much detail for the sake of job preservation, the techs are helping out with a big company project and management is stepping up with overtime to make it happen.

I put in 5.5 hours of overtime on Sunday and another 3 hours today/tonight.  There will be more overtime tomorrow.

The upside of this is that it will bring in MONEY    I’m hoping to be able to work Labor Day which would bring in even more MONEY 8)

Seeing as how I need to replenish my ammo supply, I desperately want to pick up a shotgun, Kel-Tec PF-9, a concealed carry permit, more MONEY is a good thing.  I also need to get my butt to Utah, Arizona, and California which isn’t very inexpensive, either :)

And yes, Kath, I still want a Utilikilt and an Xootr, even if they’re on the back burner so to speak :P

So my apologies and thanks for understanding go out to Kath, Glenn, Luke, and all the rest of my readers out there – I’ll be back to full speed soon

Picture(s) A Day – 22 August 2009

Yesterday was an absolute blast

Two of my coworkers, Digitarii and James, one of Digitarii’s friends from California, and yours truly took a little trip out to the desert northwest of town.  Our intentions were to make lots of noise, make our shoulders sore, have a good time, and not get anyone hurt or killed.  Happily, we succeeded :P

James and I may just be humble, gun loving computer techs, but Digitarii is a former soldier in the U.S. Army and his friend is former U.S. Navy and was a range master in the service. Rest assured that between the four of us we did have a clue as to what we were doing

I have to go into work this afternoon, so I can’t spend as much time on this post as I’d like to.  I’ve done my best to make sure the captions speak for themselves, but feel free to speak up in the comments if you have any questions

Right then, on to the pictures :D

22 August 2009 - Digitarii working the action on the K31

22 August 2009 - Digitarii working the action on the K31

No, Digitarii’s not his given name, but it’s the screen name he blogs under and I respect people’s privacy.  He’s wanted to go shooting for quite some time now, so what better occasion than a visit from a friend who hails from my former home state?

Digitarii loved the K31 and I can’t say I blame him – it’s a heck of a fun gun to shoot :)

Yo may have seen James in another post or two around this blog, but you haven’t seen him with his pride and joy yet    That’s a Heckler and Koch (H&K) USP Compact .45 caliber pistol.  He’s just gotten the class and paperwork done and is awaiting the issuance of his concealed weapons permit.  You don’t want to be on the receiving end of James and his weapon

22 August 2009 - Digitarii giving my AK-47 a workout - You can see the shell casings in the air and the action open after it's ejected a spent casing and about to feed a fresh round into the chamber

My AK-47 got quite a workout!  This is probably my favorite picture of it in action yet :)   You can see two spent casings in the air and the bolt is back after having ejected a spent casing and it’s ready to feed another fresh round of 7.62×39 ammunition from that 30 round magazine 8)

22 August 2009 - Yes, my glasses are askew, but shooting both handguns at the same time was fun! My Hi-Point C9 is on the left and James' H&K USP Compact is on the right.

While not really accurate or useful in everyday life, shooting two handguns at the same time is pretty darn fun :D

22 August 2009 - That was a full can of soda at one time. One shot from a Mosin Nagant split it in half!

Havin’ fun and makin’ noise in the Nevada desert with a pair of Mosin Nagant rifles – definitely a good time 8)

Here we have Digitarii’s friend going at the targets with both handguns.  I love to catch the slide back on recoil and the brass in the air like this :D

We can’t end this post without one other thing – video! Yes, we have video of Digitarii going rapid fire with the AK-47 as you can only do out in the middle of nowhere 8)

From my YouTube description:
Out in the desert of southern Nevada near Las Vegas with coworker and fellow blogger Digitarii and a few friends having fun. Digitarii has never tried bump firing, so we let him have a go at it.  Please note that we had a perfectly safe backstop and everyone was observing safety rules as well.
IMPORTANT!!! This is not a full-auto machine gun. It is a semi-automatic rifle. Bump firing is a technique where the trigger finger is placed in the trigger guard and the firearm is pulled forward. The pull on the firearm actuates the trigger and the recoil of firing pulls the gun back which resets the trigger. This is still semi-automatic fire with only one round being fired per trigger pull. It just does it very fast.

Here’s a big thanks to everyone who made this shooting trip happen and to Digitarii for helping out with the camera duties :)   This really wouldn’t have been possible without Digitarii providing the gas and transportation and his friend stepping up to the plate with some big $$$ for ammo 8) We’ll have to do this again sometime

Have fun, everyone

Picture(s) A Day – 21 August 2009

Yes, I know I’m late, but at least I’m getting something done about it    It’s been a very busy couple of days :)

21 August 2009 - Someone from my home town!

21 August 2009 - Someone from my hometown!

With a planned shooting expedition on Saturday, my coworker James and I headed down to a couple of gun shops on an ammo run after work on Friday.  I wasn’t expecting to see a car from one of the dealerships I used to work at :)   You can’t see it here, but the bottom of the license plate frame says Richardson’s.  Yep, I was a lot attendant and shuttle driver at that dealership in my hometown of Poway, CA once upon a time

After grabbing the ammo, we stopped over at Paris Las Vegas as we were in the neighborhood and I wanted some good, fresh bread 8)  Yes, I’d really like to go back there some time when I’m really rich – the food is fantastic 8)

I’ve gotta knock out another post for yesterday, so my apologies for keeping this one so short

Have a GREAT day

Picture(s) A Day – 20 August 2009

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning today.  Really?  You mean you didn’t think we could figure that out on our own?

Nothing really all that surprising or spectacular – that’s scheduled for Saturday :)

20 August 2009 - Feelin' HOT HOT HOT!!!

20 August 2009 - Feelin' HOT HOT HOT!!!

Just driving up Lake Mead towards Cimarron here – looking at the mountains, blue sky, puffy clouds and one big @$$ sun  :P

A bit after 2100 hours and I was getting seriously hungry.  Yes, it was still 100° out.

I can’t wait for fall :)

Have fun y’all

Las Vegas Weather – HUH???

I’ve always said (well at least since I had a clue about it) that Las Vegas is a land of extremes.  Extreme excess on the Strip, extreme displays of bad driving, and extreme weather.

Take the upcoming forecast:

Yes, this is what we call normal around here

Yes, this is what we call normal around here

Pay close attention to Friday and Saturday, particularly the high temperature.  Yep, it’s supposed to be about 14° cooler on Saturday.

Not that I mind in the least    No, I prefer it to be 93° rather than 107° if I’m out in the desert putting rounds downrange with my friends 8)
