I didn’t have much time in the desert today on account of the late hour of my departure and the early hour of sunset this time of year, but at least I got some trigger time 8) I was thinking of taking pictures of yours truly with some guns, but I ran out of sunlight.
Oh yeah, I got some more pictures of wide open, Western spaces for Kath, Karla, SwampWoman, and Glenn while I was at it
Panoramas, even !
Make sure to click on the pictures to download, then click again for full size
27 September 2009 - 100°, 70 miles per hour, on the way to trigger time
Talk about convenience !!!
It takes a few minutes to load up the rifles and pistols, a few more to get onto the freeway, and then about 30 minutes to be ready to send rounds downrange
The weather today was fairly cool at only about 100° to start with, but it was a bit cooler by the time I left

27 September 2009 - Fading light of day in the desert - No, I can't get enough of this
Yes, you’ve seen that very same joshua tree before
For some reason, it just makes me think of the Old West I can’t begin to tell you how much I love living in the Old West.
Remember that guy in the pictures from the rally with the video camera? Well, the video’s been edited and uploaded
Please take the 10 minutes out of your time to watch the video of the rally these people took precious hours and precious dollars to make this event happen.
Barack Obama was on the news the other night and this exchange took place:
I don’t know about y’all, but I’ve got more than a few problems with this vision of our sitting President.
Let’s get started with the thought of treating mandating health insurance like we mandate car insurance in most places. Comparing the two is comparing apples to oranges. Sure, they’re both insurance. The problem here is that you and I have a choice of whether or not we want to own or drive a car. We can choose to take a bus or the subway. We can walk.
Without committing suicide (which I do not plan to do myself, advise others to do, or condone), we cannot decide whether or not to live. We will not have the freedom to choose.
On top of that, there’s the matter of the level of government at which the laws have been made. All those insurance mandates were made at the state level as provided for in the 10th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
Yes, the States have the legal right to mandate car insurance. They can also mandate health insurance as has already been done in Massachusetts. They’ve also mandated helmets for motorcyclists and seat belts for people in motor vehicles. Those mandates came about because of the cost to taxpayers of emergency care and other services rendered to the uninsured. BUT THEY HAPPENED AT THE STATE LEVEL!!!
Mr. President, why don’t you just follow the current law? Why can’t you let the states decide?
Getting past that point let’s examine the definition of a tax. And no, Barack, this ain’t a foxtrotting stretch!
–noun
1. a sum of money demanded by a government for its support or for specific facilities or services, levied upon incomes, property, sales, etc.
2. a burdensome charge, obligation, duty, or demand.
So as we’ve seen, the President has said that even though you will be required by law to buy health insurance, it’s somehow not a tax. The government is demanding money for a specific service. It doesn’t matter who the recipient of that money is, it’s still money being demanded to be used in a manner prescribed by the government for a service. I call bullshit on that one.
But what if you don’t want to buy insurance? What then?
This is “what then.”

Flout the mandate penalty? Face the IRS
Americans who fail to pay the penalty for not buying insurance would face legal action from the Internal Revenue Service, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation.
The remarks Thursday from the committee’s chief of staff, Thomas Barthold, seems to further weaken President Barack Obama’s contention last week that the individual mandate penalty, which could go as high as $1,900, is not a tax increase.
Under questioning from Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), Barthold said the IRS would “take you to court and undertake normal collection proceedings.”
Ensign pursued the line of questioning because he said a lot of Americans don’t believe the Constitution allows the government to mandate the purchase of insurance.
“We could be subjecting those very people who conscientiously, because they believe in the U.S. Constitution, we could be subjecting them to fines or the interpretation of a judge, all the way up to imprisonment,” Ensign said. “That seems to me to be a problem.”
Ensign’s argument , however, wasn’t persuasive to the committee — which rejected an amendment from Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) to eliminate the individual mandate.
Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) was the only Republican to vote with Democrats to preserve the mandate.

Maybe someone just misconstrued something here. Everyone’s human, right? We all make mistakes after all.
Senator Ensign followed up with Mr. Barthold. He requested written confirmation so as to remove all doubt. And he got it:
Written confirmation of Tyranny
In the interest of transparency, I’m posting two links to the original .pdf file. Click here to download the .pdf from Politico.com or click here to download it from this site.
Get this into your head right now. If you don’t allocate these funds from your budget as the government mandates, you will be charged with a misdemeanor. If you don’t go along with that idea, the federal government will come after you with guns.
No, before you even start thinking about telling me there are no guns involved, stop right there. You know just as well as I do that taxes are not optional. If you decide not to pay them (and you’re not a member of Congress or a Presidential appointee), the government will take action to collect the money that you owe by law. If you still refuse, they will arrest you on criminal charges. If it comes to the point that you’re going to be arrested and facing those federal criminal charges and you resist, they will use force. If you choose to escalate your resistance to using deadly force to prevent being taken into custody, they will respond in kind.
I don't think they've given them away, either.
So now we’ve established that this “individual mandate” really is a tax and that the government will use fines, jail, and even deadly force to ensure your compliance in paying it. We’ve established that there’s no way to opt out of paying this tax. If you’re breathing, you’d best pay up.
We’ve also established that this tax comes directly from the federal government and it is not based on the income of an individual. That last part is one of the biggest problems with this whole Charlie Foxtrot that’s supposed to be a “health care plan.” You see, there are specific limitations placed on federal taxes by the Constitution which is why we have the 16th Amendment.
From Archives.gov:
AMENDMENT XVI
Passed by Congress July 2, 1909. Ratified February 3, 1913.
Note: Article I, section 9, of the Constitution was modified by amendment 16.
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.
Before the 16th Amendment, we had only Article I, section 9 of the Constitution.
The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a Tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person.
The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.
No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.
No Capitation, or other direct, Tax shall be laid, unless in Proportion to the Census or enumeration herein before directed to be taken.
No Tax or Duty shall be laid on Articles exported from any State.
No Preference shall be given by any Regulation of Commerce or Revenue to the Ports of one State over those of another; nor shall Vessels bound to, or from, one State, be obliged to enter, clear, or pay Duties in another.
No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law; and a regular Statement and Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from time to time.
No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.
———————–
Again, let’s review. This “individual mandate” is a tax. It is a direct tax on individual Citizens of the Sovereign States by the federal government. It is not based on those Citizens’ income as allowed by the 16th Amendment, nor is it “in Proportion to the Census or enumeration herein directed to be taken” as spelled out in Article I, section 9 of the body of the Constitution itself.
This “individual mandate” is therefore by definition Unconstitutional. It is Tyranny.
If the legislature can pass this, if the President can sign and enforce it, and if the Judiciary allow such actions to take place, there is nothing the federal government cannot control. There is no part of the Constitution they cannot ignore. The Constitution will be as ineffective and impotent as a document I might draw up declaring that I am God.
Without a functioning Constitution, the Republic that is the United States of America will for all purposes cease to exist. We will no longer be a nation under the Rule of Law, but instead under the Rule of Men.
There were supposed to be protections built into the Constitution – checks and balances on the distribution of power. The President was supposed to protect against Unconstitutional bills from Congress becoming law. Just look at the Oath of Office of the President of the United States of America as set forth in Article II, section 1 of the Constitution.
Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:–”I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
And yet, having taken that Oath, we have a President who is agreeing to even debate the merits of such a demonstrably Unconstitutional piece of fertilizer of bovine origin proposed legislation. Rarely is such blatant hypocrisy on such public display from such a high ranking public official.
I’d love to ask President Obama how this fits in, but he’d just deny that it’s a tax again. Never mind that it would be the same thing as saying the moon is really made of paper, he’d continue with the line his focus groups deemed best for swaying the masses.
Our last hope for a peaceful, Constitutional resolution to this situation lies in the Judiciary. It lies with a group of nine men and women who decide what the Constitution means. If the Judiciary fails us, we will have a couple of choices. We can pay or we can refuse to pay because of our dedication to the Constitution. If we refuse to pay, we can choose to go to jail or we can resist. If we resist, we have the choice of facing the guns of the federal government or facing our own guns.
Folks, I’ll be writing my Congressional Representative, Senators, and the President about my concerns. I will also be emailing, faxing, and calling them. I will demand answers. You will see the content of that correspondence on this site in the near future. I call on you to join me, no matter what your party affiliation or your outlook on the issue is. Let them hear from The People for whom the Constitution was created.
After thinking this through, writing it down, and re-reading it, I’m in a bit of a melancholy mood. Please excuse me for a bit while I go check on the comments and the rest of the blog before I head out into the desert for some trigger time and recoil therapy. I just need to clear my head.
See y’all soon. Take care of yourselves and each other until then.
So today was the Un-Elect Harry Reid rally down in Harry Reid’s own hometown of Searchlight, Nevada.
I told everyone I was going and I wasn’t about to go back on that declaration. I also said I’d have pictures and I wasn’t about to let everyone down there, either
My apologies for the lateness of this post, but I was up until nearly 0400 working on other stuff, woke up at about 0800, then went to the rally. I just came home afterwords, relaxed a bit, and took a much needed nap. I also wound up fielding calls from a couple of friends who needed to talk to someone about some serious stuff, and then I got back to work on this post.
And now, without further delay, here’s the post y’all have been waiting for
26 September 2009 - Searchlight, NV isn't a short drive from anywhere - Click to go to the Google map
As you can see, Searchlight isn’t close to anything. It was about a 65 mile drive from where I live to the rally. It’s quite a ways farther than that to anywhere other than Las Vegas.
The reason people came from several states to protest against a Senator from Nevada is that Harry Reid is keeping their elected Senators from doing their jobs. By controlling the flow of legislation in such a way that other Senators don’t have a chance to influence or even read the bills, Harry Reid is effectively disenfranchising these voters. I don’t know about you, but I call that Tyranny and I find it completely unacceptable in a Representative Republic.

26 September 2009 - Panorama of the crowd from the northwest
I wasn’t expecting too many people, but the crowd didn’t disappoint me or anyone else who showed up. Honestly, what would you expect? Someone called for a rally in a place that’s not only in the middle of nowhere in Southern Nevada on a day with 100° temperatures. But plenty of people still took the time out of their lives on a hot Saturday to show up and stand up for their beliefs.
About those two pictures above – I thought a couple of panoramas would be a good way to show how many people actually did show up. Click on the images to download full size and then click on that image to see actual size.

26 September 2009 - Irony: Harry Reid Road leads to the cemetery
When I saw this I was truly amazed that it hasn’t made its way into a political ad yet. I hope it does in the near future.
I wonder if the esteemed Senior Senator from Nevada knows about this little bit of irony in his hometown ?
26 September 2009 - Janet Contreras speaking to the crowd
Janet Contreras is a friend of Glenn Beck. She’s also an incredible speaker. Her speech covered many subjects, but chief among them was the loss of freedom we’ve suffered in her lifetime due to various and sundry groups being “offended” by something or other. She recalled going to a voluntary bible study in a mobile bible study van which went around to all the schools back then. That was until someone was offended that the kids had the opportunity to choose to go to the bible study.
I have to say that Janet is also one of the nicest, most intelligent people I’ve had the pleasure to meet. Funny, I keep finding this kind of person in the circles I’ve traveled lately. Freedom loving people who care more about America than they do about any political party seem to be that kind of people.
26 September 2009 - Don the Electrician speaking to the crowd
This is Don the Electrician. He’s a religious man who helps in councilor those who need it. He also owns a business which has felt the pain caused by the continued impairment of the economy, having had to lay off half his crew. He also makes Joe the Plumber look downright meek
26 September 2009 - Just people who showed up to give their support
This wasn’t a group of “AstroTurf” wannabes. This was just a group of regular people who were willing to drive a lot of miles to be heard.
26 September 2009 - Political activism and Capitalism in action
I suppose some people might have problems with this. I see it as inspirational. I’d have bought one of these shirts if I’d have had cash.
26 September 2009 - Dan Brownell, Vietnam Veteran, had one of the best signs I've ever seen
There were quite a few Veterans in the crowd. Quite a few were Vietnam Vets.
You didn’t see two signs that were alike. Most of them showed just how creative people can be.
26 September 2009 - Crew with press credentials covering the event for Congressontrial.com
Someone’s gonna have a video on YouTube soon
26 September 2009 - Bill Parson, Republican candidate for Harry Reid's Senate Seat, speaking to the crowd
Bill Parson is running against Harry Reid in the next election. He speaks my language – respect for the Constitution.
I don’t know who I’ll have the chance to vote for, but I know it won’t be Reid. If Mr. Parson is on the ballot, he’ll get my vote.
26 September 2009 - Sonny Borelli (GySgt USMC Ret.) firing up the crowd in fine United States Marine Corps style
26 September 2009 - Sonny Borelli (GySgt USMC Ret.) - Holding up a copy of the Constitution
The last speaker of the day was Gunnery Sergeant Sunny Borelli of the United States Marine Corps. He’s retired from the Corps, but he hasn’t lost any of that United States Marine Gunnery Sergeant charisma! His speech was outstanding and it’s thanks to him that I have my own printed copy of the Constitution.
26 September 2009 - Assembly of the signs after all the speakers
26 September 2009 - Assembly of the signs after all the speakers
26 September 2009 - Assembly of the signs after all the speakers
After all the speakers had given their orations, the rally organizers had all the people with signs come up front for pictures.
26 September 2009 - Retired United States Marine - You can't see the leg braces in this picture
Yet another Former Marine and Vietnam Veteran. You can count on Marines to eschew subtlety
And yes, I do want that Second Amendment patch
One thing I almost forgot to mention here: All of the Veterans I spoke with had one thing other than honor and service to their country in common. None of them had ever heard of Oath Keepers. I fixed that and made sure to give each of them an Oath Keepers business card If their reactions to what I told them and what they read on the back of those cards is any indication of their true feelings, Oath Keepers will likely have some new members in the near future
26 September 2009 - After the event, the facility was spotless
26 September 2009 - After the event, the facility was spotless
You’ve seen pictures of a city after a demonstration. You’ve seen the trash and damage. That didn’t happen here and it didn’t surprise me one bit. One of the organizers told me that they’d had 20 kids from a high school and 200 trash bags ready for any cleanup that might be needed. They didn’t have to lift a finger. Everyone took care of their own trash.
Remember that huge protest on the National Mall in D.C. a while back? Guess what? Not a bit of litter.
Aside from being genuinely nice and good people, the Freedom loving set I’ve come to know lately is also the responsible set. I’ve preached personal responsibility around here more than a few times, but it’s really nice to see that I’m not the only one and that it works just like I always thought it would.
26 September 2009 - Bill Parson and Janet Contreras took the time to have their picture taken with me
Yeah, I had a good time. These are the kind of people who will take the time to chat with you and to have their picture taken with you as well
I’m honored to have made their acquaintance.
26 September 2009 - Harry Reid supporters left only these signs and didn't even join in a discussion
26 September 2009 - Harry Reid supporters left only these signs and didn't even join in a discussion
26 September 2009 - Rally orgainizers took the time to remove the balloons and signs which showed the way to the event
About that cleanup – I wasn’t quite finished. Notice all the Harry Reid signs that were put up before the event by someone unknown to us. Notice how they’ve been scattered by the wind and become eyesores?
Compare that with the gentleman above. I’d stopped to make a phone call in a parking lot on the corner of Highway 95 and the street the rally was held on. While I was there, someone came and took down the balloons which had attracted attention and then this nice guy came by and took down the rally sign.
We don’t leave our trash out in the street for someone else to clean up. We leave the places we go as nice or better than we found them.
26 September 2009 - Scenery between Searchlight and Las Vegas on the way back home
I thought of Kath when I took this picture
I can’t say enough about how much I love the truly vast, wide open spaces of the desert southwest. I hope Glenn and I get the chance to show her what it’s like out here. The vistas are gorgeous, the sunsets breathtaking, and the spirit of the Wild West is still around
That’s all for now, folks. It’s way late/early and I need to get some sleep. Tomorrow should include some trigger time (yeah, I know you’re just surprised as all get out by that one ) and more posting. I’ve got two posts in the works right now that I think are pretty darn important, but I figured they could wait a few more hours if it meant getting these pictures and this story out first.
Yesterday afternoon/evening, the Missus and I went to Red Lobster for dinner. It was a two fold celebration, of sorts. One: It was the last fling before the unemployment ends. And there is a bit of set aside due to her inheritance/savings.
Two: It was a real sit down meal after the surgery to remove the left kidney. The young lady who escorted us to our table asked if were celebrating anything. We responded that we were. When the Missus replied that it was because she was going to get to keep me around for many more years, the young lady almost fell over. She thought that possibly we were joking with her. We then explained to her what had happened to me and my kidney.
Perspective. Yeah. A whole new perspective on this end. With all that has been going on in the news lately and hearing about how bad someone has it when they have mortgaged themselves above their eyeballs. I was working and making the bills. I got laid off in an industry that is cyclic, that being the aircraft manufacturing industry. In Wichita, where I live, I am not alone. There almost 12,000 of us in this position. Some have gone to other things, even going back to school. My daughter is going to start CNA training soon. She was at a local compamy that made cabinets for business aircraft. A friend of mine was a jail guard for many years before building aircraft. He is back at the jail in Kansas City, MO. I had a start date of September 14 at Edwards AFB as a civilian employee of the Air Force. Things were looking up.
Then I had my own personal event. On the 4th of September, I went to see my doctor. I was having some digestive tract difficulties that were lingering. Doc gave me a check and ordered blood work and such. And then he sent me down the building for a CT scan. When that was all completed, he said…..I have good news and bad news. Yup, he really said that. The good news was that the digestive thing was diverticulitus, treatable with anitbiotics and such. Handled. The bad news was we found a significant spot on your left kidney. Insert mule kick to the stomach, here. He already had his nurse and liason person getting me an appointment with a urologist. On the 10th of September, the Missus and I went to the urologist. He told us that because of the location and size of the Renal Mass as he and his staff called it, that the kidney had to come out. It seems that the mass was too close to the artery to risk just taking the mass by itself. By the time we were leaving his office, the surgery was already scheduled, for the 21st.
Said surgery took place on the morning of September 21. It took Dr. Farha and his team one hour and forty-five minutes start to finish. Robotic-laproscopic surgery is something else. On Wednesday, he showed up for his rounds at the hospital. He said that I could go home later that day. The labs on the kidney were good. The pathology was that the mass was cancerous but due to it’s placement on the outside of the kidney, I was at an 85 percent plus survival rate. That means that I will be around for quite awhile. The cancer is gone because the affected kidney is gone. The incisions are there and are sore. Sometimes the big one hurts a fair amount. I have a small supply of generic percosette for when the pain is a bit too much to handle. And the edges of these incisions itch, like crazy, at times. Getting over it is almost minor and should take about four weeks.
And the Air Force has allowed me to start on the 9th of November at Edwards AFB. As soon as I had all the information, I let them know and HR on base said that the job would be waiting for me after I was released by the urologist and my own doctor.
Perspective…….there is a whole new one from this Old Sea Dog.
And to Jeff and Kath here at Parrothead Jeff, I can’t say thank you enough. Others out there in the sphere that I have come to know well are Pinch Paisley, Joy at Little Miss Attila, Swampwoman at A1a South, Sondra at Knowledge is Power, Chrissie at PC Free Zone and my sister, author of Pixie Place. Pinch has been mustering the troops as it were for assistance in case things were going to get really hairy. A true shipmate if there ever was one. When the Missus and I get settled in out in the Mojave Desert, I intend to do my best to have all of them at the house for a Santa Maria BBQ and a desert sunset over the Tehachapi Mountains. And then me, Jeff, Kath and Joy are going to shoot jugs of water to bits with my Sharps, Number 1 in .45-70. That’s the plan, at this point in time.
And above all, there is the Missus. Sharon Kay, to whom I have been married to for over 26 years. And after the initial shock, denial, tears and such, it was her just being there. Something so simple, yet so wonderful. Just her, being there. And my youngest, Amanda. She is still Daddy’s Little Girl and always will be. Even when she eventually becomes a Grandmother, she will still be Daddy’s Little Girl.
Those who know me have no questions about my position on abortion. Basically, I think it’s evil if it’s not done for the health of the mother or in cases of rape or incest. At best, it should be an issue for the states to decide.
But this post isn’t about where I stand on abortion. It’s not about where you stand on abortion or what anyone thinks of abortion at all.
It’s about the reasoning in the case of Roe V Wade and how the current government is trying to have it both ways when it comes to government run health care.
Correct me if I’m wrong here, but the reasoning behind the ruling in Roe was that what goes on between a patient and a doctor is private and therefore protected by one’s Constitutional Right to Privacy. Because of this Right to Privacy, the government could not tell someone what they and their doctor could do and abortion should be a Constitutional Right.
I don’t really buy into it and I have never pretended to agree with any of this. Still, it’s considered Settled Constitutional Law and held inviolate by the Democratic Party and the left side of the political field. This is one of the Pillars of Power that keeps the Democrats in office and in control. They CANNOT go back on it.
Now, consider this: The plan as it stands right now which those same Democrats are trying to ram down our throats seeks to control exactly that which the Supreme Court has held to be Constitutionally Protected. All medical decisions, being funded by the government, would be subject to government oversight and approval. You would have no more privacy.
So which is it? Are the conversations, consultations, and decisions of a United States Citizen protected by a Constitutional Right to Privacy or are they open to legal regulation by the federal government?
Of course, I’m trying to get government to follow logic which is somewhat like trying to divide by zero or herd cats…
Freedom, or rather the loss thereof is why you shouldn’t want any form of government to have control of health care. Especially financial control.
So you don’t quite understand this, do you? Don’t worry, most people don’t get it. Even after they understand it, some just don’t care.
Here’s how this works. If someone’s paying for something you’re taking advantage of, they have control of how you use that product or service. If the government contributes to your pension, they have a say in how both their money and yours can be invested. If they pay for a road, they get to make the rules for its use and maintenance. If they pay for a vehicle, they have the same say as they do about use and maintenance as they would for that road.
Do you get it yet? No? OK, I’ll tie it together for you.
If the government is paying for your health care, they’re paying for your upkeep and therefore have a say in everything that impacts the object of that fiscal expenditure. By funding your health care, they have a say over ANYTHING you do with your body.
Do you like to eat red meat? How about riding a motorcycle without a helmet? Shooting without ear plugs or eye protection? Do you like to drink alcohol? How about tobacco – do you smoke or chew? Do you like having unprotected sex? Do you want to have your wife give birth at home? Kiss it all goodbye.
Some out there might say that these are stupid things to do. I might agree on some, but the point isn’t whether or not they’re good or bad, smart or dumb, but that you have the choice in most areas to do as you please and by funding your health care, the federal government would have a means to directly legislate how you live your life.
Have you ever seen Demolition Man? It’s been a pretty good road map so far as to how things are turning out these days.
Cops can’t do much of anything and the government, headed by a “benevolent” figure named Raymond Cocteau, tells everyone how to live. They’ve achieved peace and health at the cost of freedom.
There’s still a resistance movement literally living underground and feeding on the scraps of the society above. All prisoners are cryogenically frozen, but Cocteau has a plan to rid himself of the leader of the resistance, Edgar Friendly (Denis Leary). Cocteau releases the most dangerous prisoner, Simon Phoenix (played by Wesley Snipes) to kill Edgar Friendly, but he goes on a rampage instead. Police lieutenant Lanina Huxley (Sandra Bullock) releases wrongly convicted police officer John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) to go after Phoenix.
Here’s a few quotes.
(Stallone as John Spartan) -You, get me a Marlboro.
(other person)-Yes, of course.
(other person)What’s a Marlboro?
(Stallone as John Spartan)It’s a cigarette. Any cigarette.
(Bullock as Lenina Huxley) Smoking is not good for you.
Anything not good for you is bad.
(Computer)You are fined one credit for violation
of the verbal-morality statute.
(Spartan)What the hell is that?
(Computer)-You are fined one credit….
(Spartan)-Bad language…
(Huxley)…chocolate, gasoline, uneducational toys
and spicy food.
(Huxley)Abortion is illegal, so is pregnancy
if you don’t have a license.
(Squad Leader) Simon Phoenix! Lie down with your hands behind your back.
Simon Phoenix: What’s this? Six of you. Such nice, tidy uniforms. Oh I’m so scared!
[the Police Officers look at each other]
Simon Phoenix: What you guys don’t have sarcasm anymore?
(Squad Leader to his automated assistant) Maniac has responded with a scornful remark.
(automated assistant) Approach, and repeat ultimatum in an even firmer tone of voice. Add the words, “or else”
Get ready for the “Cocteau Plan” everyone.
I tend to be a bit more like Denis Leary’s character, Edgar Friendly.
(Edgar Friendly) You see, according to Cocteau’s plan I’m the enemy, ’cause I like to think; I like to read. I’m into freedom of speech and freedom of choice. I’m the kind of guy likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder – “Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecued ribs with the side order of gravy fries?” I WANT high cholesterol. I wanna eat bacon and butter and BUCKETS of cheese, okay? I want to smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section. I want to run through the streets naked with green Jell-o all over my body reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly might feel the need to, okay, pal? I’ve SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It’s a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing “I’m an Oscar Meyer Wiener”.
(Edgar Friendly) Up top, you live Cocteau’s way.
What he wants, when he wants,
how he wants.
Your other choice: come here.
Maybe starve to death.
If you don’t see the connection between government funding of your upkeep and government regulation of every aspect of your life, I can’t help you. Best of luck to you, though!

VALLEY FALLS – Members of a local VFW hand down their own punishment after a man burns an American flag on their property.
We’re told the man burned the flag after a bartender at VFW Post 1938 in Valley Falls wouldn’t serve him alcohol.
“Alcohol does strange things to people,” said post commander Nick Normile, “but disgrace to the American flag, we can’t tolerate that.”
It’s a lesson in patriotism that the disgraced local man–whose identity we’re protecting–may have learned the hard way at the VFW hall.
Members tell NEWS10 the flag burning happened last Friday night when the man came in and was refused a drink because did not have the proper identification. That’s when they say he walked over the flag pole and did something they consider unpatriotic in the extreme.
Normile explained, “He got mad, came outside, lowered the flag and set it on fire.”
Normile says the flag that was burned belonged once flew over a fox hole in Iraq. A fox hole that several U.S. soldiers never made it out of alive. (ed. – emphasis added)
Normile, a Vietnam veteran himself, was so incensed over the flag burning that he hunted the man down.
“I found him on Sunday and I duct taped him to the flag pole,” Normile said bluntly. “He didn’t deny it, said he was drunk. Let’s just say he volunteered to sit out here duct taped to the pole.”
For six hours the man sat under the pole, wearing a sign describing his actions. Passersby snapped pictures.
“I told him to sit there like those kids that were in that foxhole and see what they felt like because you are only getting a small taste of what they went through,” Normile told NEWS10.
He adds the man learned his lesson, and with that lesson learned, Normile now wants to protect the man from any violent retaliation.
Normile asked NEWS10 not to reveal the man’s name to also protect the young man’s family.
The bits of the flag that survived will be retired during an official ceremony.

VALLEY FALLS — The young man was given three choices: get turned over to the police, go one-on-one in a fight with a seasoned war veteran, or be duct-taped to a flagpole for six hours with a sign around his neck identifying his alleged crime: flag burning.
It was the third option that would still have the small town buzzing a week after a 21-year-old was hunted down and forced to endure a public humiliation with its roots dating to the Middle Ages. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1938 were incensed enough to tie up the man last Sunday after they accused him of setting the flag in front of their building on fire.
Post Commander Nick Normile, a Vietnam War veteran, said the man came into the post’s bar Sept. 18 on Poplar Avenue and was eventually turned away for not having a proper ID.
Apparently angered, the young man, who Normile did not want to name, cut the rope of the American flag flying overhead and used a cigarette lighter to set it on fire, Normile and others said.
The man sat pilloried as the village had its fall youth soccer picnic with a long parade of children passing in front of him.
“He’ll never disrespect the flag again, I can tell you that,” Normile said.
Normile said the flag had at one point flown over U.S. troops in Iraq had special significance.
Veterans, both local and nationwide, responded to the event as accountings were posted online to the official VFW Facebook page and national Web site. Comments posted supported the act and added ideas for further punishment.
Other nearby business owners said they knew of the event but refused to give an accounting. Unconfirmed reports by citizens said the alleged flag-burner was a relative of a previous commander of the post.
Calls made to the alleged flag burner and a spokesman for the national VFW organization for comments were not returned. The Rensselaer County Sheriffs office confirmed knowledge of the event, but said they were not involved. State Police in Brunswick were contacted, but a trooper said no record of the event could be found.
The flag will be disposed of at a formal ceremony, Normile said.
I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but I’d call that justice and Potential Patron got off easy this time
Anti-Reid Rally Planned Saturday in Searchlight

BULLHEAD CITY – An “Un-Elect Harry Reid Rally” will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of the Searchlight, Nev. Community Center.
Reid, 69, serves as majority leader of the Democratic Party-controlled U.S. Senate. He was first elected senator in 1986 and is up for re-election next year.
The rally is being held in Searchlight because Reid was born and raised there. He maintains a legal residence in the historic mining town on U.S. Route 95, located roughly halfway between Laughlin and Las Vegas.
The event is organized by the Lake Havasu City-based Committee on Taxation Without Representation, chaired by attorney and former mayor Harvey Jackson.
“We’ve got a couple of senators in the state of Arizona that represent us pretty well,” said organization secretary Dennis Schilling. He explained why his Arizona-based group is opposing Reid and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who were elected outside of Arizona.
“What they do is they control those agendas and those committees … and they directly affect and cross state lines each and every day relative to their decision making,” Schilling said.
“It takes our representation – meaning Kyl and McCain – out of the equation. They don’t even get a chance to read the bill, there’s no chance to debate the bill.”
The rally has attracted attention from around the country, Schilling said. “We’ve gotten feedback from as far south as Florida, Georgia. I got a personal phone call from Pennsylvania.”
Organizers are told, “We can’t be there but we support your cause.” He said they are expecting people from Phoenix, Southern California and Las Vegas to attend the rally.
“The music will start at 10:30; The speakers will start at 11 o’clock and will probably run ’til 12:30,” Schilling said. Music will continue from 1 to 1:30 p.m. as participants file out.
“We have formally invited – through a letter – Sen. Reid to be there but I seriously doubt if he’ll show,” Schilling said.
“Depending on how well this goes,” he said, “we will take the same kind of approach and go to Speaker Pelosi’s district in the Bay Area.”
The Searchlight Community Center is located on Cottonwood Cove Road, a half mile east of U.S. 95.
I’m going to do everything I can to be there tomorrow. There will be pictures.
Well done and well written. I had a rather long comment already done up and for some reason, the Captcha thing burped. So here it is!
To the folks that seem to think that we need to be “taken care of” by the government, I have this to say. What have you been smoking or snorting lately? The Constitution says life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Ben Franklin said in reference to the happiness; you have to catch it yourself.
I was in Jimmy Carter’s Navy. Where in the hell was that 50 percent? The peanut farmer was even a graduate of the Naval Academy! Makes one wonder what in hell happened to his grey matter. A couple of his classmates: H.Ross Perot and VADM Stansfield Turner, who ended up being CIA director in the Carter Administration.
Resources are gone? Yeah.Right. Like Jeff says about the Toulomne Meadows and those other wonderful places. I have a few of my own. The upper end of the Bitterroot River is one. Trees, deer, elk and trout. Up in the Selway-Biotterrooot Wilderness, managed correctly it will provide timber for a very long time. And the plains, where all that wheat comes from to make your bread and pasta. And 3 years ago, when I was working the rock trains near Williston, ND, the oil and gas drilling outfits were hitting the basin in force. All we need now is to start drilling offshore. To hell with nancy pelousi, dingy harry reid, dianne “dumbass ma’am”fienstein and company. Drill now. Less dependence on foreign(arab) oil.
Think and act like responsible individuals. No one should have to hold your hand through life other than your spouse, children and grandchildren. Anyone communicating with their congress-critters needs to remind them of that little item. Since most of our public viewing of “responsible” adults is the likes of pelousi, dingy reid, widdle bawney fwank and the other usual suspects. Kind of makes one want to take a well worn belt to their collective backsides. That is how uppity cry-babies were dealt with when I was a kid.
Oh! Just for giggles for all of you who want Uncle Sam to provide everything to you. I do not owe any of you anything, anymore. Nada. Zip. Zilch. I settled that account on 30 September 1993, when I retired from active service. Do it the hard(normal) way.
So Jeff, get the post in the op-ed part of the newspaper that reid wants to go bust. Open your letter to the editor with something to that affect. It should get attention. Then hit your representative in the house. And when you start a family, hold to the values that your mom and dad instilled in you. And when your kids start school, let the school know how you feel about certain things, in no uncertain terms.
I think that’s enough rambling for now. The big incision is talking to me!
Picture(s) A Day – 27 September 2009
I didn’t have much time in the desert today on account of the late hour of my departure and the early hour of sunset this time of year, but at least I got some trigger time 8) I was thinking of taking pictures of yours truly with some guns, but I ran out of sunlight.
Oh yeah, I got some more pictures of wide open, Western spaces for Kath, Karla, SwampWoman, and Glenn while I was at it

It takes a few minutes to load up the rifles and pistols, a few more to get onto the freeway, and then about 30 minutes to be ready to send rounds downrange
The weather today was fairly cool at only about 100° to start with, but it was a bit cooler by the time I left
