STORMBRINGER – A Bucket of Shrimp

Cruising through the blogosphere via my feed reader, I came across a post by Sean Linnane over at STORMBRINGER entitled A Bucket of Shrimp.  It’s about an old guy and his weekly tradition on a pier and you can’t really make sense of it until later on in the post, but it’s well worth taking the couple of minutes to find out just what’s up with “Old Eddie” and that bucket.  I’ll give you a hint – “Old Eddie” is actually a military pilot who gained considerable fame in WWI    Go.  Read it all.  You’ll be really glad you did 8)

Been a busy week and such

I have been up to you know where in alligators and falcons this week. Being the WG-10 and newest Crew Chief, I spend a LOT of time on the line launching and recovering airplanes. And yesterday was a wash for one of them. The Air Force washes it’s airplanes every 180 days. In Navy Air, we washed every 14 days and every 10 days in the A-7.

I am now the owner of a 37 inch LCD Flat Screen TV. It is nice. The old tube set finally gave it up. Coupled with our newly acquired satellite service, pretty cool stuff. The missus has had a 32 inch flat screen for the bedroom since we were still in Wichita.

The Kings and Ducks games are very nice to watch, indeed.

We went with the satellite service due to our local cable company not being worth **** on a boar hog and ***** on a priest. You get the picture :) I made a funny!!!!!!!!!!!

Been sorta keeping up on the scumbag currently residing at 1600 PA Ave. in DC. What a worthless piece of ****! Along with the Wicked Witch of The West and the “Gambler” from Searchlight we are in deep doo-doo if their plans go through. I really am having a hard time with the statement from the Bay Area Queen that we “need to pass the bill to find out what is in it” Rope, Tree, Nancy……Some assembly required. And the TOTUS going off on fishing as it is a bad thing. Lousy bastard anyway! I really wonder if most folks realized what he really was when they voted his sorry, commie a** into office along with all those districts across the country that thought a minion of obammy-mammy was the best choice to represent them in the congress. Sort of gives credence to a personal little theory of mine. That being………the average American couldn’t pour piss from a boot with the directions written on the heel. Just sayin’ ya know.

Rant over.

And all intelligent, conservative and patriotic bloggers should have Pinch and Lex on their blogroll!

ORPO Sends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Picture(s) A Day(s) – 9 & 10 March 2010

This has not exactly been a banner year for my health.  First some sort of food borne thing at the beginning of January and now this.  It appears I’ve got a nice combination of laryngitis along with a probable case of strep.  As you can imagine, this is just a wonderful situation considering my job working in a call center and talking on the phone nearly all day.  All joking and kidding aside, I’d much rather be at work doing work than at home doing virtually nothing.

So, getting back to yesterday, I’d been getting more and more hoarse as the days had gone by and my throat was getting more sore as well.  I called it quits for the day at work yesterday at about 0900 and headed out to go see the doctor.  My doctor was actually on vacation, so I saw the nurse practitioner, but she can still write prescriptions    The doctor’s visit set me back $15 and the amoxicillin was $5.99 at Costco.  Having a good job is worth quite a bit these days.

Anywho, on to the pics :)

Before we get to yesterday, we have to go back one more day.  I stopped by Exotic Pets to pick up some dinner for Ziva and look at what I found – an amazon tree boa :)   I think the coloration is rather pretty, but I won’t be picking one up anytime soon – they cost more than a Glock

10 March 2010 - Snow on the Sheep Range just north of town

Getting back to yesterday, I had picked up my prescription and was heading on out when I noticed that it was snowing on the Sheep Range north of town.  Call me strange if you must, but I always think this is rather cool 8)

10 March 2010 - Gotta love the "Attack Grandma" :D

A bit later, I noticed this truck and had to laugh – very quietly, mind you due to the fact that I didn’t have much of a voice – at the bumper sticker and the mud flaps :)   No, I’m not being mean or derisive here – I just thought they were great :D

10 March 2010 - Driving towards Mt. Charleston from Highway 95

I’d also noticed that it appeared to be snowing on Mt. Charleston and seeing as how I wasn’t really feeling all that bad at the moment – I just couldn’t talk and therefore couldn’t work – I figured I’d take a short drive up the hill…

10 March 2010 - Snow showers in the distance

10 March 2010 - Snow showers in the distance

Yep, that looks like snow in the distance.  And it’s not coming down very lightly, either

10 March 2010 - First snowflakes at the entrance to the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area

I saw the first snowflakes floating at me right about here which is around the 5,000 foot elevation mark.  You can see ‘em if you look closely.

More snow and it’s actually stuck to the hillside, not just melted.

10 March 2010 - A little bit farther up the road and more snow in the distance

10 March 2010 - A little bit farther up the road and more snow in the distance

Now, that looks like some reasonably serious snow up in the distance…

10 March 2010 - Camping anyone?

10 March 2010 - Camping anyone?

And indeed, it was snowing pretty well right around here.  One of these days, I’m going to actually go snow camping – I’ve never really had the chance before.  Sure, we were going to do it in Boy Scouts, but it never actually happened.  This will require some serious investment in cold weather gear as I don’t have much at this time, but I think it’ll be worth it :)

10 March 2010 - Memorial to those who perished in a military air crash in 1955 on Mt. Charleston

You can pretty much read the sign if you click on the picture or you can go to www.coldwarmonument.org to read the story there, but this memorial tells the tale of an ill-fated flight from Burbank, CA to Groom Dry Lake in 1955.  The men who perished that day were working on the Lockheed U-2 reconnaissance aircraft and their loss was deeply felt by those in the program.  I’d known a bit about it before, but the website has some really good info as well.  May they rest in peace.

The thought has occurred to me that it might be nice to live somewhere like this and that park ranger wouldn’t be all that bad a job.  This picture did nothing to shake those ideas    I could use being somewhere that wasn’t connected to a telephone sometimes :)

10 March 2010 - Icicles :D !!!

10 March 2010 - Icicles :D !!!

Another one of those things I never really got a chance to see very often is icicles.  Yes, they’re probably pretty common to lots of people out there, but not to me.  I know something of how this is for many of you out there – huge casinos are commonplace in my life, but millions of people pay thousands of dollars for a weekend in my town :)

I figured I’d put the panoramas into their own little group for this post.  Click on ‘em to see full size as usual :)

I know it’s just some of the pictures from above with a little bit of driving and music from YouTube’s audio swap function, but I think it’s one of those things that will help bring back good memories in the future and I hope you liked it, too 8)

That’s it for today.  Here’s hoping you have a great day and that I feel well enough this weekend to get out and do some fun stuff

Re-Linked at Pinch’s Place!

One of the first people to give me a link way back when was Pinch.  He’s a former Naval Flight Officer who used to run the radars and other systems in F-14 Tomcats while trusting the guy up front not to do anything that might endanger their continued condition of actually living.  A great writer with a sharp wit, Pinch has a pretty good blog going and has for some time.

But a while back, his blog went Tango Uniform and lots of stuff was lost.  Including, apparently, the link he had back over to this place.  That is, it was lost until today when he posted a new one on his blog :D

Thanks again, Pinch, and keep up the great work 8)

Bad Apples & Only Ones Close to Home

Boulder City, Nevada is just a bit south of Las Vegas.  It’s one of only two places in Nevada where gambling isn’t legal and until recently was also one of the few places where firearms not being carried with a concealed carry permit were required to be unloaded and cased – unless you wore a uniform.  Statewide preemption of firearms laws a couple of years ago allowed for the open carry of firearms by civilians, but not much else has changed.

So, you ask, what’s this got to do with bad apples?  Well, it just so happens that one of those people who were the only ones previously trusted to carry firearms openly due to his wearing of a uniform has just been arrested and charged with multiple felonies.  One of those felonies was burglary while in possession of a firearm.

According to lasvegasnow.com, Chief Constable Larry Markotay was arrested back on 22 February 2010 for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.  During the course of his arrest, the arresting officers found a few guns in the car and traced one of them back to a recent burglary.

Folks, I’m one of the guys out there who actually likes cops for the most part.  Remember – Dad was California Highway Patrol for over thirty years.  I’ve heard both sides between Dad, his co-workers, and the kids at school.  Quite a bit of the time, I look at both sides of an issue and side with the cops.  If you’ve never read LawDog, you should.  He’s a Texas LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) with an interesting background who tells it like it is with a sense of humor.  Often they’re out there either by themselves or with only one partner and backup is a long ways off.  They’re doing a tough job that lots of people would shudder to think of taking on themselves.  They’re the ones running to the sound of trouble.  They go door to door in wildfires to make sure residents have evacuated.

Still, like any group out there, you’ll find a few bad ones in with all the good ones.  This goes for law enforcement just as much as it does for your co-workers or the population of your high school.

David Codrea’s blog, The War on Guns, features many stories of the bad apples in the bunch.  He’s not out to say that cops are evil or that all cops are bad.  As David says on his blog:

The purpose of this feature has never been to bash cops. The only reason I do this is to amass a credible body of evidence to present when those who would deny our right to keep and bear arms use the argument that only government enforcers are professional and trained enough to do so safely and responsibly. And it’s also used to illustrate when those of official status, rank or privilege, both in law enforcement and in some other government position, get special breaks not available to we commoners, particularly (but not exclusively) when they’re involved in gun-related incidents.

I emailed David a link to the story and he published his take on it along with including a link over to this blog for which I’m very thankful.  I can’t say I disagree with David at all.

I’ve been known to carry a 9mm on my hip quite often lately and most places it gets about as much attention as a black hole in a distant galaxy.  Heck, in Bass Pro Shops the only reason I knew anybody even noticed it was that they thought I was an employee and asked me questions that I did my best to answer.  But this is Nevada and the people here seem to have a bit of common sense.

That thousands of people in Nevada and other states do the same thing on a daily basis without any “blood in the streets” or “gunfights at high noon” doesn’t matter to groups like the Brady Center (you’ll have to google it – I’m not giving them a link) who would have you believe that government agents such as police and military members should be allowed to carry guns and then only while on duty.  I’ve never agreed with this and I’ll continue to fight that idea as long as anyone tries to advance it.

One of the best examples I can give you, aside from stories like former Chief Constable Markotay and David Codrea’s Only Ones, is the following video of a law enforcement officer in a school classroom.

That officer’s name is Lee Paige and he was (and possibly still is) a member of the DEA.  A good article on the incident can be found at The Smoking Gun along with Mr. Paige’s lawsuit against the DEA.  He didn’t like the fact that he was the butt of jokes and the target of ridicule after the tape was released.  Oh yeah, my heart bleeds </snark>.  And before anyone says I don’t know what that’s like, I can assure you that I most definitely do.  One of these days, I’ll post the whole story about yours truly, a shotgun, a couple of co-workers, and a kitchen sink in the desert.  Nobody was seriously injured (they didn’t even require a band aid), but I’ll never forget the lessons I learned from that incident nor will anyone ever let me forget it, either.

But at least I never said that I’m the only one who should carry a means of defense.  I hope everyone who can come to terms with the ultimate responsibility of carrying a firearm and who is committed to doing so in a responsible manner actually does so.

I’d have to say that while I’m appalled at Mr. Markotay’s behavior, I applaud the Boulder City Police for doing their job regardless of who the person might be who’s on the wrong end of the law.  Just because someone is a cop or a politician doesn’t mean they’re not subject to the same laws as an average citizen who works in construction, hospitality, tech support, or any other field.

There’s no reason for them to be the only ones with regard to much of anything.  The only ones with lights and sirens?  Sure.  They need to get to the scene of the crime or accident as quickly as possible – I have no problem with that.  The only ones with badges and uniforms?  I’ll go along with that – there are a few things cops do for us that the average citizen can’t – like serving search warrants and pulling over speeding motorists in which case official identification is a good thing.

But allowing them to be the only ones with a legal means of effective of self defense against those who don’t care about the law in the first place?  No, sorry, I can’t agree with that.  It’s just plain stupid and goes against my interests in self preservation and has proven to be a source of easy targets for the bad guys.

Well, Duh!!

My Last Dollar

From AP:
Rules set by the Federal Reserve that will ban banks from charging such fees (overdrafts on debit cards), without first getting permission from the customer, are set to take effect July 1.

But Bank of America is going a step further than the regulations require. It will simply no longer allow debit card purchases to go through if there isn’t enough money in the account.

NO!!  Say it isn’t so!?!  You mean I can’t buy something if I don’t have money in the bank???  What kind of crazy talk is this??    ;)

Are we so childish and irresponsible that it has to come to this?  Well, yes, evidently it has.

Excuse me while I go hide my dollar from myself!

Picture(s) A Day(s) – 6 to 8 March 2010

Hey, I told y’all I’d put up some new material, right?  Here’s hopin’ you like it :)

It was a heckuva weekend.  I didn’t spend all that much time in the apartment which was a bit of a departure from the normal plan of rest and recuperation, but it was rather nice anyway

I won’t get into the saga of the changing of Kyleigh’s car – she’s getting a different one since the used car place couldn’t repair the first one she got and they agreed in the contract to give her another one in that case.  No, I won’t spoil the surprise but I’ll post pics when I finally get ‘em

After all that “fun” we decided to head on over to Mr. Lucky’s 24/7 to get some food and catch up with Korey :)   Yep, it was great as always!  I remembered to take a couple of pics of one of the displays that I think y’all might just recognize 8)

6 March 2010 - Not a bad idea if you ask me

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – the people here can’t drive.  They really can’t drive around big rigs.  This is a pretty good idea in my book :)

But we weren’t done with the weekend on Saturday – we headed out on Sunday for Margaritaville :D

This is a first – Kyleigh allowing herself to be photographed for the blog  ???  Yep, it finally happened and now y’all can put a face to the name you’ve read so often of late :)   She’s a good kid and I still say that even though she’s nineteen years old

8 March 2010 - Evening in the Las Vegas desert

8 March 2010 - Evening in the Las Vegas desert

I needed to de-stress after work today, so I headed on over to New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms.  The weather still feels like winter around here – it’s windy, rainy, and cloudy as you can see.

8 March 2010 - New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms - Ruger LCP

8 March 2010 - New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms - Ruger LCP

Once again, my favorite gun store graciously hosted me as I got some more good gun Pr0n :)   Tonight we have a couple of options for those who wish to acquire a pistol for concealed carry, but remember that the prices are always subject to change

First, we have the Ruger LCP – the Lightweight Compact Pistol.  It’s chambered for the .380 ACP round and was inspired by the Kel-Tec P-3AT.  If you saw that P-3AT a couple of days ago, it’s already gone.  They’re that popular.  The Ruger is in just as high demand and is also a great choice.

8 March 2010 - New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms - Walther PPS

8 March 2010 - New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms - Walther PPS

I understand that the PPS is James Bond’s new gun and I can see why.  The trigger and takedown are pretty much identical to what you’d find on a Glock, but it’s much slimmer – almost as slim as my PF-9.  I considered the PPS, but you can see by the price that it’s out of my reach financially.  It’s also a bit heavier than the PF-9, but it’s still a great gun for people who live in places where the PF-9 isn’t legal to buy.  The safety on the trigger and a loaded chamber indicator go a long way in places like California and some of the East Coast states :)

Well, I guess I’m caught up for now and it’s high time I get some more rest as tomorrow’s another day on the phone lines.

Have a great Tuesday, everyone

EDIT – It must have been the late hour or something, but I forgot to thank Adam for the use of the $100 bill as a scale reference    Adam’s the owner of Infinite Arms and has been absolutely outstanding to deal with and to chat with 8)  Thanks, Adam :D

About Yesterday…

Folks, I’ll try to be back up online tonight.  I’m at work now, so I don’t have a whole lot of time on break, but I wanted to let y’all know just a bit of the situation.  I don’t want to say too much, but a few people in Cindy’s family are having very big problems.  I figured I’d take Kyleigh and Stevie (Cindy’s nieces) out for a while to take their minds off stuff and I didn’t get back until 0100 this morning.  That was yesterday, but something similar happened on Saturday as well due to Kyleigh’s new car requiring exchange at the used car place she bought it.

Suffice it to say that the weekend was quite busy :P

Today’s probably going to be rather busy as well – I’m probably going to have to make a doctor’s appointment due to my voice.  It’s been cutting out on me for no real reason quite a bit of the time which is not good for work.  Basically, I almost can’t speak at times and need to keep clearing my throat.

But even with all that, I’ll be back with new posts and pictures later this evening

Picture(s) A Day – 5 March 2010

So, how to relax after a long week at work that won’t cost too much?  I don’t know about you, sometimes I want to go where everybody knows my name :P   Yeah, it’s getting to the point where New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms is kinda like Cheers    I’m starting to know the regular customers, but the staff all know me and vice versa :)

5 March 2010 - Back at New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms

The first time I showed up, they had a banner for a sign and it’s nice to see the new permanent version 8)  As always, I had a great time chatting with the owners, staff, and customers while I picked up a couple of minor items    But yeah, I also did a bit of window shopping :P   Let’s check out some of the inventory :D

5 March 2010 - Walther G22 - .22 LR caliber bullpup rifle

5 March 2010 - Walther G22 - .22 LR caliber bullpup rifle

The Walther G22 rifle is an interesting piece of equipment.  It’s a bullpup design, so the grip and trigger are in front of the actual action.  One of the nice things about the G22 is that you can change whether it ejects the spent brass out of the left or right side of the firearm.  Trust me – lefties appreciate this    I don’t have anything against the G22, but I think I’ll stick to my Ruger 10/22 :)

5 March 2010 - Sig rifles - I love Swiss guns!

5 March 2010 - Sig rifles - I love Swiss guns!

Years ago, the Swiss used a gun I own as their military firearm – the K-31.  These days they use a version of the top three rifles you see here.  These are the civilian version – the Sig 556 which is a very nice gun, even if I can’t afford one.

The rifle on the bottom is the Sig 522 – a .22 LR version of the Sig 556 which from the reports I’ve read is a great “tactical 22″ for fun and training.  It’s much cheaper to shoot .22 LR than it is 5.56mm like the AR-15 and Sig 556 use

5 March 2010 - More cool rifles for sale 8)

5 March 2010 - More cool rifles for sale 8)

See those top three guns?  Those are M1A rifles which fire .308 caliber (AKA 7.62 x 51 or 7.62 NATO) rounds.  7.62 NATO has better terminal performance than 5.56mm at long ranges which is why the military is reintroducing the M1A into service overseas.

I honestly don’t know much about the Vector Arms rifle below the M1As, but I do know a bit about the R1A1 below it.  It’s a semi-auto version of a NATO military rifle which is also chambered in 7.62 NATO.  The charging handle is on the left, but the brass still ejects from the right.  I still haven’t figured out how you’re supposed to mount optics on it, but I wouldn’t mind having one at all 8)

5 March 2010 - Kel-Tec P-3AT - My PF-9's little brother

5 March 2010 - Kel-Tec P-3AT - My PF-9's little brother

Kel-Tec makes a wide variety of firearms other than my beloved PF-9.  This is probably their most popular handgun right now – the P-3AT (pronounced by Kel-Tec reps as P-380) which is chambered in the now very popular .380 ACP (AKA 9 x 17mm) caliber.  I prefer the power of the 9mm Luger (AKA 9mm Parabellum or 9 x 19mm) round and I’m willing to take the extra size and weight of the PF-9 to get the performance of that cartridge.  Others prefer the .380 for its lighter recoil (I don’t blame them after firing the PF-9  ) and because of that lower power, the firearm can be smaller and lighter.  The P-3AT is only .77″ thick and weighs in at 8.3 ounces.  If the PF-9 is just too big, heavy, or hard kicking for you, the P-3AT might be the gun for you if your laws allow it :)

5 March 2010 - Walther PPK - James Bond's gun

5 March 2010 - Walther PPK - James Bond's gun

Bond, James Bond.  The Walther PPK used to be 007’s gun of choice until recently.  He’s packing a different Walther these days and we’ll get to that one later, but for now I figured I’d show this one off    Chambered for the same .380 ACP cartridge as the Kel-Tec P-3AT, but that’s one of the only similarities.  It’s .98″ wide, weighs 20.8 ounces empty, and is single action after the first shot.  Firing double action (pulling the trigger with the hammer down), the trigger pull is heavy.  It does have a manual safety which will safely drop the hammer (it’s on the other side) and will likely be legal in places the P-3AT isn’t due in part to that feature.  It’s also more expensive than the P-3AT, but many people are more than willing to pay the extra money for a variety of reasons.  Yeah, I could live with one of these

5 March 2010 - Gen 4 Glock 23 RTF - .40 caliber semi-auto pistol

5 March 2010 - Gen 4 Glock 23 RTF - .40 caliber semi-auto pistol

Finally we have the new Generation 4 Glock 23 with the rough texture frame.  The major differences between the older versions and this one are the shape of the serrations on the slide and the adjustable grip which allows the user to change the back strap to suit different hand sizes.  This particular pistol has the rough texture finish – RTF – which makes it easier to keep a good hold on the gun when you fire it.  I’d love to have a Glock, but I have other priorities for the little cash that I have right now

Big thanks again to New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms for their hospitality and permission for photography in their establishment – they really don’t have to allow this 8)  Their welcoming attitude, great customer service, and very reasonable (like usually ridiculously low) pricing will keep me coming back to them for all my firearm needs :)

That’s it for now – have fun this weekend

Cool Gun!

I’ve seen some pretty tricked out guns in my time which isn’t surprising considering all the gun stores and shooting ranges I’ve been to, but there’s a few that I’ve really liked.  The same thing goes for some of the things I’ve found on the web.

Take this picture – I really love this gun :D   Glocks are cool to begin with, but add a cool paint job and some laser engraving and it gets even better    This happens to be the work of Lone Wolf Distributors who’s more than happy to do some pretty cool work on guns, especially Glocks 8)  You can see more of their stuff on their website by clicking here :)

My only problem is that this would forever be a range gun and nothing more if it were mine.  The last thing I’d want to have put in front of a jury would be something like this if I had to use it in self defense.  I prefer something that’s dual use like my Hi-Point or my PF-9 for the most part – they’re bone stock.   But like I said, if I were to keep it as a range gun I’d love to have it

Of course, I’ve had my eye on some other firearms which are regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and I’d prefer to keep those out of a defensive encounter as well.  Maybe I’ll have to send something like my 10/22 in for some decoration sometime :)

I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank JR Shepherd from Lone Wolf Distributors for granting me permission to use their photo in this post.  JR – you guys rock 8)
