Couple Faces Eviction For Displaying Old Glory – UPDATED 27 May 2010

From Army Times:

Couple may face eviction over flag display

The Associated Press
Posted : Wednesday May 26, 2010 12:13:19 EDT

OSHKOSH, Wis. — American flags will fly this Memorial Day weekend to honor those who gave their lives while serving their country.

But, in Oshkosh, a couple is being told to take down the U.S. flag they have displayed in their dining room window.

Dawn and Charlie Price have been told by their apartment’s management company they must take it down, or face eviction.

This is BULLSHIT and it has got to stop.  It keeps happening around the country even though it has always resulted in a dinner of crow and apologies from the management in the incidents I’ve seen.  When will the assholes out there learn?  How many lawsuits?

Dawn and Charlie Price have my support.

UPDATE FROM THE COMMENTS:
Dave H. left us some intel in the comments. I sent my email.

The Downside of CPAP Machines

I got to sleep a bit later than I’d have liked last night due to editing the pics and video and getting the post together for all the snowy goodness up on Mt. Charleston.  No biggie – I’d be fine.  It’s not like I’ve never done anything like that before, right?

Wrong.  You see, there’s one big problem with CPAP machines – they don’t work when there’s a power outage.  I woke up at 0630 to find the power out not just in my apartment (I did pay the bill  ) but also in the surrounding area.  I’d planned on sleeping until 0700 or 0715 but I wasn’t about to try to go back to sleep – I tend to sleep through alarms and other loud things when I do that.

And when I can’t sleep with my CPAP machine, it’s not a good thing at all.  Six hours of sleep without that machine is like 45 minutes to the average person.  It’s really rather important.

Somehow I still managed to make it through the day.  Oh well, it could be worse, right?

See y’all tomorrow when I’m not about to doze off 8)

Picture(s) And Video A Day – 23 May 2010 – Snow on Mt. Charleston

It was a long weekend, but not the type that’s usually thought of as a good thing.  Yes, I worked both days as I’ve said before which is why it was long, but it was still good due to the extra money which is most certainly welcomed these days :)

So the weekend was long and I didn’t use most of the time for fun stuff like going to the Clark County Shooting Park.  That doesn’t mean there wasn’t some sort of fun activities to be enjoyed    Far from it actually today.  Yep, I saw that it was snowing up on Mt. Charleston about the time I left work for the day and figured why not?  Why not go and have some fun in the snow?

I’ve got to say that it strikes me as pretty unusual to have snow near Las Vegas when we’re only about a week away from June.  If we’re still dealing with “global warming” then I’m glad we have it – I’d have frozen my tail off if we didn’t :P

Folks, I’d planned to do some sort of commentary on each pic and whatnot, but it’s way too late/early for me to do that now.  Editing the pics and the video took quite a bit of time as did choosing the best music from YouTube’s “audio swap” function.  Throw in the time it took to upload all these pics (I upload the full size files so you can get ‘em big if you click on them in the post), so they’re not all that small and it takes some time.  Therefore, please see the captions for descriptions and be sure to comment or ask any questions in the  comments :)

With all that out of the way, let’s get to the pics

Last, but not least we have a new video that I managed to put together and upload to YouTube tonight 8)  It’s a combination of still pictures in a slide show that I added some video from the trip to and swapped out the (mostly non-existent in the original) audio with YouTube’s “audio swap” to make it a bit better.  Here’s hoping y’all like it :)

Well, that does it for tonight – I’ve gotta get some rest so I can get to work on time tomorrow morning.

Have a great week everyone

Picture(s) A Day – 20 May 2010

So, everyone’s wondering about just where in the heck the post with pics from Thursday’s journey down to the strip is.  OK, at least Kath’s got to be wondering about theat :P   The real answer is that I’ve just been runnin’ on Island Time    But I’m finally fixing that now 8)

20 May 2010 - Kristen and Steven at Margaritaville

Like I said before, I got a call Wednesday night from Kristen saying she was pulling into town.  Sadly, it was getting pretty late and she wouldn’t be ready to go out for a few hours.  We agreed to get together Thursday for some food, drinks, and good times at Margaritaville.  Food as in Volcano Nachos :)   Sadly, I screwed up and didn’t get pics of the food    But at least I got a decent picture of Kristen and her boyfriend Steven :D

Kristen is a friend I’ve known for quite a few years now.  I met her and her now ex-husband when I was working at Captain’s Cove in Seaport Village in San Diego.  Yeah, she’s a Parrothead, too.  Kristen is also a person I’d classify as incredibly nice and a wonderful friend – hey, she puts up with me, right  ?  In all seriousness, she’s a first class sweetheart and I’m glad to have her as a friend.

I hadn’t met Steven before but he’s a great guy, too.  He’s respectful of everyone, easy to talk to, and a great guy to hang out with 8)

The rest of the pics were taken shortly after we left Margaritaville.  Sadly, I didn’t get to hang out with Kristen and Steve for all that long – they had a prior engagement with one of their friends who paid for their trip.  Their friend is getting married and they were in town to plan the wedding.  I thought I’d hang around the intersection by Margaritaville and get a few pics and panoramas out of it.  Make sure to click on the panoramas for full size – they’re BIG 8)

That’s all for now – have fun everyone

The Burn

Cute, Ain't it?

The result of the radiator overflow bottle’s cap coming off in an overheated condition. Along the I-5 in crawling traffic, just a ways south of the 5/14 split to the AV and home. It hurt. Like hell, it did. Car is in shop in Pacoima. We are driving a rental. Yeah, Sucks.

Hats off to Engine 91 paramedics of the LA County Fire Department.

Feel Good Headline of the Day – Key Al Qaeda Figure Accidentally Blows Himself Up, U.S. Officials Say

From Fox News:

A man whom the U.S. described as a key figure in Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula accidentally blew himself up, U.S. military officials told Fox News.

The officials say Nayif Al-Qahtani was “messing with a bomb” when it went off. U.S. officials had been watching him, but Fox News’ sources insist the U.S. had nothing to do with his death.

The money quote is the part about “messing with a bomb” :)

Yeah, I’ll have a better weekend now 8)

Chicago Mayor Daley – A Fan Of Rape By Firearm?

No, literally.  And no, I’m not kidding.

From Fox News:

Irate with a reporter’s question on the effectiveness of the city’s handgun ban, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley offered to give a first-hand lesson following the shooting of an off-duty police officer.

“Oh, it’s been very effective,” Daley said, according to MyFoxChicago.com. “If I put this up your butt, you’ll find out how effective it is. If I put a round up your … you’ll know.”

Daley, whose comments came at a news conference on Thursday previously scheduled to discuss the city’s ban and a pending U.S. Supreme Court lawsuit challenging the law, became testy when a reporter questioned the ban’s effectiveness as the mayor held a rifle confiscated from city streets.

Jacquelyn Heard, Daley’s press secretary, later told the Chicago Sun-Times that Daley was somewhat exasperated because the individual asking the question — a reporter from the Chicago Reader — was “missing the point that unrestricted guns are a devastating issue” for the city.

I hereby call for Mayor Daley to prove to us that what he proposed is not some form of torture by undergoing the experience himself.  I’d also suggest that one of the Chicago PD owned “patrol rifles” be used in this demonstration.

Anyone else want to see Mayor Daley shove a gun up his ass?  I suspect we could make it a pay-per-view event…

[EDIT] I just thought of something else.  I can’t imagine this being considered anything other than a “terrorist threat” if you or I had said it.

Friends In Town – Surprise!

So, I got a call last night from one of my old friends who I met while working at Captain’s Cove in Seaport Village.  Kristen is an absolute sweetheart :)   Turns out she was rolling into town at around 2130 hours local time and had a few things to do before heading out on the town for a bit.  It seems her friend is getting married and Kristen is to be the Maid of Honor.  Awful nice of her friend to spring for a night in Vegas, ain’t it?  I think so.

Normally, I’d have gone out at midnight, gotten in at 0300 and to hell with the consequences, but they’re here for today as well, so we decided we’d get together after I’m out of work at 1630.  As you can imagine, there’s likely to be very little posted this evening but I hope you’ll understand :P

Something tells me we’re going to either end up at Margaritaville (Kristen loves the volcano nachos) or Mr. Lucky’s (she’s never been there before) 8)

Have fun

The Hidden Dangers of Rosary Beads

You’ve no idea how glad I am that I’m not in school these days.  Here’s another reason why:

From ABC:

HAVERSTRAW (WABC) — The parents of a high school student from Rockland County are demanding answers after their ninth grader was suspended for wearing rosary beads to school.

He was suspended even though the school doesn’t even have a policy banning them. So did the principal go too far? Jason Laguna is a former altar boy and proud Catholic. He got his rosary beads as a gift, thinks they look cool and sometimes wears them under his shirt at school. But last Friday, right before dismissal, he pulled them out on his way out. He was given a one-day suspension from Fieldstone Secondary School. His mother calls the punishment extreme, considering the 14-year-old is a member of student government and, according to his last report card, “is a pleasure to have in class.” Laguna says she was told the school has an unwritten policy regarding beads because they could be used to show gang affiliation. The principal claims it was insubordination, saying Laguna’s actions, “endangered the safety, health, morals or welfare of himself or others.”

I have a problem – I’m a bit of a loud mouth.  It’s gotten me in trouble more than a couple of times before, but I just keep thinking about how what’s right ain’t always popular or easy.  Whether this was an “unwritten rule” (and just how in the hell is that supposed to be enforced???) or something else, it’s just flat wrong.  Don’t even try to sell me on the “endangering safety, health, morals, or welfare” line of bullshit either.

This Probably Won’t Last Long, But It Should Be Fun To Watch!

Panera cafe says pay what you want

Bakery hopes to expand nonprofit restaurants around U.S.
By Christopher Leonard
updated 3:32 p.m. PT, Tues., May 18, 2010

CLAYTON, Mo. – Panera Bread Co. is asking customers at a new restaurant to pay what they want.

The national bakery and restaurant chain launched a new nonprofit store here this week that has the same menu as its other 1,400 locations. But the prices are a little different — there aren’t any. Customers are told to donate what they want for a meal, whether it’s the full suggested price, a penny or $100.

The new store in the upscale St. Louis suburb of Clayton is the first of what Panera hopes will be many around the country. Ronald Shaich, Panera’s CEO until last week, was on hand at the new bakery Monday to explain the system to customers.

Something tells me they don’t quite get the concept of capitalism.  Or maybe they do, but I don’t quite know how this is supposed to end other than as a train wreck.  I suppose it might work in places like Hollywood with wealthy, hippy cultures.  Other places not so much…

The evil, greedy capitalist in me is screaming that this is one helluva business opportunity.  Just think of how many pot heads would buy pipes, bongs, and hookahs if their smoke shop were located next to a place where they could get a meal for a penny

Of course, I can see where a non-profit restaurant would be a good thing.  Helping those in a community who can’t afford all that much on a voluntary basis is a good thing.  I just think they’re doing it wrong.  Don’t let the people choose how much to pay.  Instead, figure out a good price based on cost and make the restaurant work financially while still being non-profit.

Of course, I’ve also been told that I have as much common sense as I have hatred for firearms, so your mileage may vary :P
