Picture(s) A Day – 16 July 2010

I would’ve written this last night, but I was a bit busy getting some of the pics for the post :wink:   I managed to get out of the apartment and do something different and a bit more fun than sitting in my place with the air conditioning on :)

16 July 2010 - 0736 hours and it was already 95° when I left for work

16 July 2010 - 0736 hours and it was already 95° when I left for work

Summer’s in full swing and we’ve got an excessive heat warning going here in town.  It’s this time of year that I desperately miss the ocean and the fog back in San Diego.  I love the climate there, but the laws and taxes suck.  If I had to choose (and I actually do), I’ll deal with the summer here in Vegas.

After a very long and trying week at work, I figured I’d stop by Lee’s Discount Liquor.  They’ve got lots of cool different beverages there and sometimes free tastings.  I left with a bottle of the New Amsterdam gin :)   I’ve never been a gin drinker, but then again it seems I’ve never had good gin.  New Amsterdam has a very interesting array of flavors and it was a steal at about $9.00 8)

16 July 2010 - 1750 hours on my way home and the car shows 122°

This one was taken on the trip home from Lee’s.  The official temperature at North Las Vegas Airport was somewhere around 110° but I wouldn’t doubt this temperature on concrete and asphalt in town.

A bit later on, I noticed some interesting returns on the weather radar for my area.  They were a ways off to the north, but not all that far away…

I’m a sucker for thunderstorms :P   If it doesn’t cost too much to chase ‘em and I have a chance I’ll do it just about every time.  Last night was pretty successful :)   I tried getting video, but it didn’t come out all that well so these pics will have to do.

One thing I wanted to make sure to tell everyone was just how incredibly dark it was out there :shock:   Yes, I’ve been places that dark, but it was either for the purposes of developing film or I was in a cave when they shut the lights off.  I was quite a ways away from Vegas and all the lights, but with the clouds overhead there was pretty much no light at all.  It was almost spooky!

My drive took me all the way up to Alamo, NV where I found this gas station.  The lights were all on, but the doors were locked.  Oh well, I could’ve used a snack but I lived.

I thought the green dinosaur was pretty cool 8)  You always see one on the sign for Sinclair gas stations, but this is the first time I’ve seen one standing out front as a mascot :)

16 July 2010 - Cool old truck at Moapa

16 July 2010 - Cool old truck at Moapa

My last stop of the night was at the Moapa Paiute Travel Plaza for a “nature break” and maybe a snack.  OK, so I picked up a few feet of cannon fuse while I was at it – wouldn’t you :wink: ?  This truck happened to be in the parking lot and I thought it was pretty cool, too :)

That’s it for now, but I hope you enjoyed the pics :)   Have a great night :mrgreen:

Those other seven states

The additional 7 states are (in no particular order): The state of Confusion, the state of Disarray, the Lowly state, the state of Anarchy, the Welfare state, the Nanny state, and the State-ist.

Borrowed with permission from Christopher Burns. Face book acquaintance.

I gotta hand it to him on this one. I could not have done better. For all my liberal relatives with no clue.

And then there was Sheila Jackson-Lee and saying there were still two Vietnams.

That ends today’s political stuff. Or maybe not.

Thought you all might enjoy this one!

Oakland, CA – Why Bother With Cops?

Oakland, CA isn’t a place I’d want to live. I’m sure the climate’s OK and Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghiradelli Square, and the Palace of Fine Arts are right across the bay, but the politics aren’t exactly my speed. The crime rate and reactions to unpopular court decisions aren’t the greatest either.

Now the city of Oakland has decided that they might need to cut 80 police from the force and stop responding to some crimes in person to save money.

From NBC Bay Area:

Chief Anthony Batts listed exactly 44 situations that his officers will no longer respond to and they include grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft and vandalism. He says if you live and Oakland and one of the above happens to you, you need to let police know on-line.

Some 80 officers were to be let go at midnight last night if a last-minute deal was not reached. That’s about ten percent of the work force.

“I came her e to build an organization, not downsize one,” said Batts, who was given the top job in October.

That deadline has been extended to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Here’s a partial list:

* burglary
* theft
* embezzlement
* grand theft
* grand theft:dog
* identity theft
* false information to peace officer
* required to register as sex or arson offender
* dump waste or offensive matter
* discard appliance with lock
* loud music
* possess forged notes
* pass fictitious check
* obtain money by false voucher
* fraudulent use of access cards
* stolen license plate
* embezzlement by an employee (over $ 400)
* extortion
* attempted extortion
* false personification of other
* injure telephone/ power line
* interfere with power line
* unauthorized cable tv connection
* vandalism
* administer/expose poison to another’s

Negotiations are going on at Oakland City Hall in the mayor’s office.

My question here is why bother with the cops at all? If they’re not going to do what the Citizens need from you aside from handling the serious crimes such as murder and arson, why even bother? I know ways to stop loud music, especially if the cops won’t come out on a report of interfering with or injuring a power line :wink:

The Dry Lake

Rogers Dry Lake

From a hill top at Edwards. I was showing the daughter around one day last week. Certifiable. The absolute middle of nowhere!

This is the lake bed that the shuttle uses when it has to divert from Florida due to weather. It is resurfaced by the winter rains.

Taxed When Earned, Taxed When Spent, Now Taxed When Transferred???

The TEA Party traces its heritage to the famous protest in Boston Harbor, but it also stands for Taxed Enough Already.  Seriously, I’m about fed up with taxes.  Nevada has low taxes, but that’s because the legislature here spells “tax” different most places – they spell it “fee” hoping most don’t see the truth.

The real truth is that we’re taxed on our income – when we make money.  We’re taxed on our spending – sales tax.  Now they want to tax us merely when we transfer our money.  Even when we withdraw it from an ATM.

From The Hill:

One idea for raising taxes to pay down the debt is the bill introduced this February by Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.). His “Debt Free America Act” (H.R. 4646) would impose a 1 percent “transaction tax” on every financial transaction — whether paid by cash, credit card or any form of financial transfer, the only exception being transactions involving the purchase or sale of stock. Theoretically, everyone would pay one cent on the dollar for every such transaction in America every day — whether $3 million on a $300 million business acquisition, $300 on the purchase of a $30,000 car, or $5 on a $500 ATM withdrawal.

It should be interesting to see just how creative people get when they avoid paying this tax and how long it is before a Constitutional challenge is raised regarding this issue.  Do a bit of reading through that short document and please tell me if you find somewhere in it where the government is granted the authority to do this to us.  Please share the answer because I have no freaking clue where they think it comes from.

Licensing Rights – Which Rights Are You Willing To Pay For?

It will likely come as no surprise that I’m against pretty much any sort of licensing of any rights whatsoever.  If you need a license, the government gets a say as to whether or not you can do whatever it is they want to license.  Even if you only have to pay a few dollars like you do for a fishing license, you still must receive government permission.  I don’t know of any particular right to fish, so I don’t mind paying for a fishing license.  I also don’t mind driver’s licenses, pilot’s licenses, or architect’s licenses.

But we all have the right as Citizens to keep and bear arms.  Even the Supreme Court has recognized this right although they somehow decided that there’s such a thing as reasonable regulation.  I still don’t get how that’s supposed to work.  For those not familiar enough with the Second Amendment, let’s review:

From the National Archives:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Mayor Daley (a possible fan of rape by firearm) doesn’t seem to get it.  The new law requires training and licensing and allows for possession of a firearm in the home, but somehow not your garage or your back yard.  It also prohibits shooting ranges and gun stores in the city of Chicago.

From Warner Todd Hudson at Stop the ACLU:

I’ve gotten this great idea from Richard “King” Daley, Mayor of Chicago, who has decided with his newest stab at gun control that we need to institute mandated firearm training classes for every Chicago gun owner as well as costly yearly licensing fees. This is a brilliant idea. So much so that I think we can expand on this idea in order to have a better, more orderly society.

Plainly Daley and his Democrat cohorts need to implement these “training” mandates on a wider basis. Not only will we have a better trained citizenry, but we’ll have billions of dollars flowing into the treasury from the high fees that such classes must invariably entail. And jobs? Why, think of how many jobs will be created by these new policies. We’ll need millions of low-level, perfunctory clerks, classroom instructors, and paper pushers to get this all off the ground. And what could be better than more education and more money in the form of hidden taxes going to fill the pockets of government officials?

So, since we have already decided that citizens observing their Constitutional rights will be forced to pay expensive fees and take costly classes to own a gun, we need to look elsewhere to see where this idea can work as well as it does for the Second Amendment.

How about the First Amendment?

I’d say it’s a home run.  I highly suggest reading the whole thing and thinking on it for a while.

What rights are you willing to have licensed?  The First Amendment?  The Fourth?  How about a license you have to pay for in order to assert your Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination?

What does it mean to you?

Death Valley Weather

Now, that's what I call HOT :shock: !!!

Now, that's what I call HOT :shock: !!!

People in Vegas and Phoenix complain about the heat and I don’t blame ‘em.  It can get pretty darn hot here.  I’ve seen it hit 126° in parts of the valley at times.  But that’s still not as bad as it can be in Death Valley!

There’s weather.com, but I usually go to weather.gov when I want to find out what’s up with the atmosphere :)   Head on over and see what’s expected in the near future for your locale :wink:

Picture(s) A Day(s) – 10 & 11 July 2010

Not too much to blog about this weekend.  I’ve just been really darn tired lately.  Again, maybe it’s the heat.  It’s about 107° and (for the desert) muggy outside.  The humidity’s in the double digits :shock:

I had to get some ammo to someone yesterday, so we met up at New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms :)   Of course, I had to pick out a few items I thought my readers might like to see and get some good pics of ‘em to share :wink:

10 July 2010 - Taurus TPC PT738 in .380 ACP at New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms

Small .380 ACP pistols have become very popular for concealed carry these days.  Taurus seems to have gotten the message and jumped on the bandwagon with this PT 738.  This easily fits in a pocket, it’s not too heavy, and it shouldn’t have too much recoil :)

The Walther P-22 is pretty much a recreational gun.  It’s a semi-automatic .22 LR caliber pistol which is reasonably priced, cheap to shoot, and easy to use as a suppressor host :wink:   Sure, you can still hunt with it, but I’d rather have a larger caliber for other applications like self defense.

Benchmade is known for the quality knives they make.  This little piece of equipment is made strictly for rescue applications.  Their rescue hooks can go through multiple layers of seat belts, thick leather boots, and any type of clothing imaginable with ease.  It’s something I’m probably going to buy before long (this one’s only $24.99) but hope I’ll never have to use.  It’s that whole being prepared thing again :P

11 July 2010 - Texture in the sky this morning over my apartment

11 July 2010 - Texture in the sky this morning over my apartment

Again I don’t know why but I woke up at about 0500 today.  I headed out a bit after 0600 to grab a bite to eat and saw something I’ve not seen in a while – clouds :D   It’s been severe clear here for the longest time with very few exceptions, so texture in the sky is something I enjoy :)

That’s about it for now – I’ve got stuff around the house to get done.  Have a great Sunday :mrgreen:

Picture(s) A Day – 7 July 2010 – More Cool Stuff At Infinite Arms

I must have been going through withdrawals or something because I somehow ended up back at New Frontier Armory / Infinite Arms after work yesterday :)   Never one to disappoint, Infinite Arms had some pretty cool new toys for me to check out 8)

7 July 2010 - MP-5 SD - Integrally suppressed 9mm carbine

7 July 2010 - MP-5 SD - Integrally suppressed 9mm carbine

Toys like this integrally suppressed MP-5 SD in 9mm :D   This one’s only semi-auto right now, but it can be legally owned by a civilian with the addition of a registered Fleming auto sear :wink:   I do want one of these someday :)

7 July 2010 - A stun gun that looks like a cell phone!

7 July 2010 - A stun gun that looks like a cell phone!

Now this is something I’m going to buy much sooner rather than later :)   For about $27 you get a 1,000,000 volt stun gun that looks remarkably like a cell phone.  It also has a fairly bright flashlight and comes with batteries and carry case for that price as well :wink:

7 July 2010 - GSG 1911 in .22 LR

7 July 2010 - GSG 1911 in .22 LR

7 July 2010 - GSG 1911 in .22 LR

GSG stands for German Sport Guns.  They make .22 caliber replicas of AR-15s, MP-5s, AK-47s, and now .22 caliber 1911 pistols :D   I was very impressed with he fit and finish on this gun.  It doesn’t feel cheap or light weight – it feels like a real .45 caliber pistol.  Very cool indeed 8)

7 July 2010 - GSG 1911 in .22 LR with a Silencerco Sparrow suppressor

But what’s even cooler is that it comes with a threaded barrel :mrgreen:   And yes, that is a Silencerco Sparrow on the muzzle :wink:   So, does anyone think I might want one of those :P ?

That’s all for now.  Have a great day :mrgreen:
